Southport- Basketball Fall/Winter

Basketball                                                                                                                                                                       Southport Clubhouse

Each year, thousands of children in 3rd - 12th grade participate in basketball programs at the Southport Clubhouse. The goal of our basketball leagues is to provide a friendly atmosphere in which volunteer coaches work with small teams of boys or girls. These teams, which consist of players with different skill levels, are taught the basics of basketball as well as good sportsmanship while having fun and making new friends.

If you have any questions regarding the basketball program please email

Boys & Girls Grades 3-5

This league will focus on skill development (and as the season goes on), skill enhancement. Players are placed on teams based on skill level and availability. Teams will be coached by volunteer coaches who have successfully completed the Wakeman Coaches Certification Course. Course dates are listed in this book. The 3rd grade division shoots at 9 ft. baskets. The 4th and 5th graders shoot at 10 ft. baskets. All Pee Wee leagues play with an intermediate sized ball.

The difference between Wakeman’s Pee Wee league and most others is that the Wakeman coaches and staff will divide each team into two squads: “Starters” and “Finishers”. “Finishers” are players who are more experienced & only play against other “Finishers” while “Starters” are players who are less experienced or beginners, and play against other “Starters”. Each player must attend an evaluation. Evaluation dates will be available after registration.

Practice begins the week of November 13th and is held Monday-Friday primarily between 5:00pm & 8:45pm. Players will be assigned to a team and a one-hour weekly practice time based on skill level, availability and the school your child attends. A detailed information packet will be mailed out after registration. This will include practice time options, a conflict sheet, a volunteer coaching form and more information about the program.

Each team will play 9 games on the following weekends: November 18/19, December 2/3, 9/10, 16/17, January 6/7, 13/14,

Who was Red Baker?
Edward "Red" Baker was the Director of Wakeman from 1945-1975. He was the master of the set shot and could out shoot anyone from the free throw the line! The impact he had on generations of young people was amazing and his name lives on at our Southport Clubhouse thanks to the Red Baker Gymnasium, home of the Red Baker League!
