Youth Basketball Programs at the Southport Clubhouse
WINTER BASKETBALL UPDATE:
To Our Community:
In response to the evolving youth basketball landscape in Fairfield and recent staff transitions, WBGC has made the decision to pause programming at the Southport Clubhouse related to Travel, PeeWee, Boys Junior, and Developmental Basketball Leagues for the upcoming Winter Basketball Season. This planned pause will allow us to reassess and reimagine our approach to youth basketball. In the meantime, WBGC remains committed to expanding access and maximizing our impact in the community.
To that end, we’re excited to announce a partnership with Fairfield Basketball Association (FBA) at our Southport and Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouses this upcoming basketball season.
As part of this partnership:
- FBA players have access to WBGC facilities for practices and games. Safe and welcoming facilities embedded in the community.
- Every FBA player gets a full Wakeman Boys & Girls Club yearlong membership. This includes expanded access to Afterschool Programming and many other exciting program initiatives revolving around healthy lifestyles, and character & leadership development.
- Safety remains our top priority. Now and always. WBGC will contribute to FBA’s infrastructure by providing onboarding and background checks for all coaches.
- Existing members & participants will not lose access. Open Rec and Afterschool Program will continue as usual.
- Red Baker League for grades 9-12 isn’t going anywhere. We look forward to hosting the Greatest League on Earth for the 2027 Season.
- WBGC Travel Basketball at our Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse will run as planned. This may also be an option for families who are still looking for programming options for this Winter.
This partnership is about increasing access to a community that we have served for over 100 years. WBGC’s focus will continue to be on providing a safe and engaging space for our families and youth in accordance with our mission and organizational strategic priorities.

Welcome to Red Baker League! See if your team is ready while having a fun night under the blacklights. Open to all high school players who want to preview our Red Baker League before it begins. Coaches can play tonight!
Red Baker 4-on-4 League
Grades: 9 - 12
Fee: TBA
Dates: January - March 2027
Location: Southport Clubhouse/Red Baker Gym
The Greatest League on Earth is back! Members may form their own team of 7-8 players to vie for the coveted Red Baker League Championship title. Each team plays an 8-game regular season schedule followed by a single elimination playoff. Depending on registration, 9th grade will play in their own division and there will be a second 11th - 12th grade division. Teens who play on their high school's basketball team are not eligible to play in the Red Baker League per CIAC rules. Rosters due by December 21.
NOTE: All players must be current Wakeman BGC Members and pay 2027 league fee.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer Coaches
Our K-8th grade basketball leagues and clinics thrive with the generous assistance of more than 100 volunteer coaches annually. Coaches include moms, dads, grandparents, alumni, community members and high school students! Background checks and child safety training are mandatory for all volunteers.
