Youth Basketball Programs at the Southport Clubhouse
Wakeman BGC's traditional basketball leagues provide a friendly atmosphere for coaches to work with small teams of boys or girls. In this environment, they learn the basics of basketball and good sportsmanship while having fun and making new friends.
The Southport Clubhouse offers Fairfield and neighboring communities a full calendar year of unique opportunities for youth in grades Kindergarten through high school to develop their love of the game.

GRADES K-2
New! 1st-2nd Grade Developmental Basketball League

Don’t miss out on our first developmental league for 1st-2nd graders. Each Saturday morning, teams meet for a 30-minute practice followed immediately by a mini game against an opponent, complete with volunteer coaches, official referee, scoreboards, jerseys, 8 foot hoops and spectators – the perfect recipe for great, fun play! Six game schedule of games will be played at 8:45am weekly. Spectators are welcome for both the practice and game portion of each week.
*Program includes bonus optional clinics exclusively for Developmental League Players: Tuesday, February 13; Tuesday, March 5; Tuesday, March 19 at 4:00-5:00pm, led by Southport Unit Executive Director Tim Cepetelli, former WBGC Basketball Director and experienced coach of 1st-2nd grade programs. Space is available in clinics for all players.
Shooting Stars Basketball Clinic

This introductory class is ideal for boys and girls in grades K-2, with a focus on fun while learning basic concepts such as dribbling, shooting, and passing. Participants play with size 7 WBGC basketballs and receive a t-shirt. Activity drills, games and friendly competitions will have your budding star eager to come back for more hoops action with friends! Parents/spectators are not permitted to remain in gym during clinics.

Basketball Skills Academy Clinic
Grades: 3-5
Fee: $75
Dates: Mondays, March 11-April 21, 6pm-7pm. No session April 15.

WBGC basketball coaching staff lead players through fun and exciting basketball skills and drills balanced with fun competitions and scrimmages. Focus is on the fundamentals of the game. Players of all experiences welcome. Players will use an intermediate size ball (provided) while grouped based on grade and experience.

Summer Basketball League

Players in grades 5-8 get a great basketball workout in our favorite summer league. Players are grouped into two teams each week and play a “pickup style” game with our WBGC coaching staff. Players receive reversible jerseys at the first game. Games will be refereed by current IAABO officials. All games played in the air-conditioned Warren Gym.
Pee Wee Basketball League
Grades 3-5
Fee: $120

Generations of boys and girls in grades 3-5 have had fun, learned fundamental skills, and made friends in our Pee Wee Basketball League! Whether your player has been playing for a few years or never touched a ball, there’s a spot for them in Pee Wee. Players are assigned to a team that practices one weeknight and teams typically play one game each weekend: 3rd graders typically play Saturday mornings. 4th and 5th grade girls typically play Saturday afternoons and 4th and 5th grade boys typically play Sunday morning/ afternoon, subject to change. Teams are coached by parent and other volunteer coaches who have completed WBGC Safety Trainings. All players attend an evaluation led by Club staff. Full details about the team placement process are provided after registration.

Junior Basketball League (Boys & Girls Divisions)

Season: February 5 - April 11

Boys Junior League is the exciting place where 6th, 7th and 8th graders choose to play in a structured environment while learning the game and developing team skills and concepts. While traditionally a league for boys, girls are welcome too! Each grade group is scheduled to play in separate divisions however two grades may be combined based on registration. Players are assigned to a team that practices one night during the week (Monday-Friday based on participant’s availability) and play one game each weekend. Teams play a 7-game regular season and then a single elimination playoff to crown a champion in each division. Teams are coached by parent and other volunteer coaches who have completed WBGC Safety Trainings.
Travel Basketball

Boys Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Due to low demand, this year there will NOT be a girls Travel Basketball program.

Season: Early November- Early March
The WBGC Winter Travel Basketball Program is for experienced players looking for a high caliber training and playing experience. Teams are coached by experienced paid and/or volunteer coaches and play in the Fairfield County Basketball League (FCBL). All players must try out for the team; placement is not guaranteed. Teams are selected by WBGC basketball staff through a
fair and impartial tryout process. If selected, the player must be a current WBGC Member and pay the travel program fee. Program fee includes all season expenses, including custom uniforms, practice reversible jersey, warm-up apparel and tournament fees. Tryout registration begins Tuesday, September 12 and tryout schedule can be found
here. Players must attend one (1) tryout in order to be considered for team placement. However, players are encouraged to attend both tryout dates. All tryouts will take place at Wakeman BGC Southport Clubhouse.

Team Roster
Season: January 2- playoffs, March 24
In the Greatest League on Earth, Grade 9-12 members submit their own teams and play an 8-game regular season followed by a single elimination playoff for the coveted Championship. All players must register online for membership and program and submit a roster no later than Dec. 21. League may fill well before 12/21 — don’t wait!

Our K-8th grade basketball leagues and clinics thrive with the generous assistance of more than 100 volunteer coaches annually. Coaches include moms, dads, grandparents, alumni, community members and high school students! Background checks and child safety training are mandatory for all volunteers.
