Smilow-Burroughs Bus F.A.Q

Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse Bus Transportation F.A.Q

Can my child take the bus to the Club any day they want?

Children are only allowed to take bus on the days of the week that they have been pre-registered through the Club. If your child is not scheduled to take the bus to Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, but a family emergency makes it necessary for them to take the bus to the Club, call the Club and speak with Melissa Moy before 12:00 at 203-908-3378. Transportation will only be provided if space is available on the bus.
What happens on half days of school?

There is bus service available to the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse on scheduled half days of school (such as conference days) but there is no bus available on unscheduled half days (due to inclement weather or other unforeseen reason). On unscheduled early dismissal days, families are responsible for arranging their child's own transportation home from school.
What if my child is sick and will not attend school?

When you notify school by phone to tell them that your child is sick, let them also know that your child will not take bus to the Club that day. This can easily by done by either phoning the school, or sending the child with a note. There is no need to inform Club staff that your child will not be coming to the Club on that day.
Is the Club open on snow days, days off from school and vacation weeks?
On snow days, Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse staff attempt to open the Clubhouse. During severe weather, the Club may stay closed for entire day. On scheduled days off from school and vacation weeks, Wakeman is usually open at 8:45am. The vacation day closing time varies by day. As a member, there is no additional fee for your child to drop in on these days. Please view our Hours of Operation.
What if I cannot pick up my child until later than expected?

Although the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse is open until at least 8:00pm daily, the structured after school program ends at 6:00pm, and program spaces are limited after 6:00pm. Children who often spend a long period of time at the Club may run out of creative ways to stay busy. Parents should have two alternative people who can pick up their child in an emergency in case parents are running late. This is also important in case your child gets sick or hurt at the clubhouse and needs to be picked up early. Keep the phone numbers of alternative rides in your cell phone and at work.
How do I contact the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse?

The Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse's phone number is 203-908-3378. Children can be reached at the Club, but the Club is a very busy place with many children and programs taking place, so phones calls should be limited to emergencies. Children may use the front desk phone to call their parents as needed.

Can my child leave the Clubhouse without a parent?

Yes, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club operates a drop-in Clubhouse, meaning children can come and go as they please. Many children walk, ride bikes, or get dropped off at the Club and some may also walk to local convenient stores. Parents should discuss their own expectations with children to be sure they reach an understanding of family rules.

What if my child is in school, but will not take bus to the Club?

If your child leaves school early due to illness or other reason, let the main office know that your child usually attends the Club but will not attend that day. If your child is in school at regular dismissal time but will not take bus to the Club, you must send a note with your child in the morning to the main office.
