Hand in Hand 2026 Celebrates Club Youth and Community

The fifth Annual Hand in Hand Celebration, held on April 21, 2026 at the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse , honored the Youth of the Year and awarded community members for their achievements.

Over 300 friends of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club gathered to recognize members of the Club and community for their achievements during the 2025-26 school year. Board members, sponsors, donors, and local government leaders were also present to witness the tremendous impact their support has on our kids and teens.

Awards were given to members who exhibited Club values, team players who modeled good sportsmanship, teens who were role models, staff who went above and beyond, and so many others who were true examples of the Club's mission to help members achieve success in academics, health & wellbeing, and character & leadership.

Congratulations to our 2026 WBGC Youth of the Year!

Selected from six exceptional youth, Maya Patten of Fairfield, CT has been named Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) 2026 Youth of the Year. Patten will receive a college scholarship from WBGC and will go on to contend for the Connecticut Youth of the Year title in May 2026. 

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Club of America’s signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders, fully prepared to live and lead in a diverse, global and integrated world economy. Candidates prepare a resume, essays, recommendations, and their school transcript as part of the competition. Finalists must stand before a panel of community judges and present a three-minute speech about themselves and their leadership.

For 79 years, the program has recognized young people for their outstanding leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to health and wellbeing. Because it allows the teen to represent hundreds of youths from their organization, Youth of the Year is the highest honor given by a Boys & Girls Club. 

Patten, recognized for her compassion and confidence, stated, “Every teen has their own path in life; my goal is to help open the door so that they can take and find it.”

Maya has demonstrated exceptional leadership as the Co-Vice President of the Keystone teen leadership club, and as the club’s Entrepreneur Fair Chairperson and Career Fair Chairperson. She also contributed to WBGC’s Torch Club, Future Leaders of Wakeman (FLOW) Club and numerous community volunteer efforts. Her service extends to welcoming refugee families, supporting local races, assisting with STEM summer camps, participating in Gambling Awareness initiatives, and engaging in Apple programming projects. She has attended multiple Northeast Regional Keystone Conferences, twice represented her community at the Boys & Girls Club of America National Conference, and was even selected to apply for the National Steering Committee.

Other WBGC Youth of the Year Finalists include Klein P. and Woodley T. from the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse, Audrey B. and Malachi F. from the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, and Kaitlyn S. from the Southport Clubhouse.

The Connecticut Youth of the Year will contend for the title of Northeast Regional Youth of the Year and the opportunity to secure an additional college scholarship. Six regional finalists will advance to the National Youth of the Year event in October 2026 to vie for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year. 

In addition, a Junior Youth of the Year finalist was chosen among all 10–13-year-olds at each WBGC Clubhouse. Finalists included Charles (Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse), Audrey (Southport Clubhouse), & Julian (Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse). Charles was selected as the WBGC Junior Youth of the Year and will continue to the State of Connecticut competition.

WBGC thanks its community leaders and staff members who served as judges for the competition. This year’s judges include Marjorie Coble (Bridgeport Public Schools), Jason Cohen (Northeast LLC), Xiomara Coleman (WBGC Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse Unit Executive Director), Joe DeSabella (McGivney Community Center), Greg Dickinson (WBGC COO), Joel Espada (Fairfield University), Jarrad McCown (WBGC Madison Ave Clubhouse Sr. Program Director), Reyanne Neal (WBGC McKinley Elementary School Site Director), Kelly Raskauskas (WBGC Board Member/Webster Bank), Najie Sumra (Allstate Insurance), and Libby McKinney Tritschler (Bedford Family Fund).

Patten and the Youth of the Year finalists will be honored at the 2026  Hand in Hand  Ceremony on Tuesday, April 21st at the WBGC Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse (595 Madison Avenue). The event also highlights the contributions of other youth and community members.  Advance registration is requested.

Legislators Act to Recognize Connecticut as the Birthplace of the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement in America

The Connecticut Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs will hold a press conference on Tuesday, February 10th at 12:30 PM in the Second Floor Atrium of the Legislative Office Building to introduce legislation recognizing Connecticut as the birthplace of the Boys & Girls Clubs movement in America.

The legislation honors a movement that began in 1860, as Connecticut communities were being reshaped by the Industrial Revolution. While factories and mills brought prosperity to some, they also brought long hours, low wages, and hardship for working families — particularly for children left without guidance or safe places to go.

In Hartford, a small act of kindness sparked something larger. A group of civic-minded women — including Elizabeth Hammersley, Louisa Bushnell, and sisters Mary and Alice Goodwin — began inviting boys living in disadvantaged circumstances into their homes for refreshments, warmth, and supervision. What started as simple hospitality soon grew into a structured, welcoming space known as the Dashaway Club, widely recognized as the nation’s first organized Boys Club with a daily, out-of-school program.

The idea quickly spread across Connecticut. By the late 1800s, Boys Clubs had formed in cities including New Haven (1871), Bridgeport (1887), Waterbury (1888), Meriden (1888), and New Britain (1891). These early Clubs reflected a growing belief that investing in young people through mentorship, education, recreation, and positive alternatives to the streets could strengthen entire communities.

In 1906, representatives from 53 independent Boys Clubs — many from Connecticut and the Northeast — united to form a national organization, establishing a shared mission that would guide the Boys & Girls Clubs movement in America for generations. In 1990, the movement formally expanded to include girls, reinforcing its commitment to serve all youth.

More than a century later, the message that launched this important organization remains just as urgent. Connecticut Needs Club Kids. And Club Kids Need You. From the first Dashaway Club to today’s statewide network, Boys & Girls Clubs has always been built on a simple idea: when communities step up for young people, young people step up for their communities.

“This legislation recognizes Connecticut’s unique role in launching a movement rooted in compassion and opportunity,” said State Representative Matt Blumenthal (D – Stamford). “What began here continues to change lives across the country. As a proud Board Member of Stamford’s Boys & Girls Club, I’ve seen what this organization does to help young people reach their full potential, realize their dreams, and contribute to their communities and our country.”

Today, that legacy remains strong in Connecticut. There are 14 Boys & Girls Clubs operating at 57 Club sites statewide, serving more than 36,000 young people each year. Connecticut Clubs advance the Boys & Girls Clubs mission by promoting academic success, good character & citizenship, and healthy lifestyles, while preparing young people for college, careers, and lifelong success in safe, supportive environments.

“When school’s out, Clubs are in,” said Don Maleto, CEO of the Connecticut Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. “For more than 165 years, Boys & Girls Clubs have been a constant presence for young people — evolving with the times while staying true to the belief that every child deserves opportunity, support, and a place to belong. WBGC Receives Early Start CT Grant, Significantly Increasing Access to Preschool Education

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) is excited to announce it has been awarded an Early Start CT Grant providing expanded access to high-quality early childhood education at its DeLuca Early Learning Center (ELC) in the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse.

Early Start CT is a state-funded early care and education program that launched July 1, 2025. It combines 3 existing programs — Child Day Care Contracts, School Readiness Grants, and State Head Start Supplement Grants — into 1 program. Early Start CT is open to all CT families regardless of residence.

Pending eligibility, youth ages 3-5 can now attend WBGC’s full-day, year-round DeLuca Early Learning Center at significantly lower weekly costs. The sliding scale for Early Start CT adjusts family fees based on income and family size. Additionally, the ELC will continue to accept Care 4 Kids funding.

“We are deeply committed to early childhood education, and the impact of this grant is tremendous. We will now be able to provide even more families with access to our program and further support kindergarten readiness,” stated Sabrina E. Smeltz, CEO of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.

The DeLuca Learning Center, which opened its doors in August 2023, features state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor classrooms designed for hands-on learning. The program offers multi-lingual, state-certified staff, with curriculum aligned with state learning standards. Participants also have access to the Clubhouse’s amenities as part of their ELC experience, including its gymnasiums, black box theatre and STEAM-based resources.

WBGC Announces Xiomara Coleman as Unit Executive Director for Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) has announced that Xiomara Coleman has joined the organization as the Unit Executive Director for its Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse in Bridgeport, CT (2414 Fairfield Avenue).

Coleman will be responsible for planning a broad range of programs within the Clubhouse and will manage daily operations. The Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse is one of three WBGC Clubhouses across Fairfield and Bridgeport, in addition to two school-based sites.

“Xiomara is an outstanding addition to the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club team and will have an immediate impact on the surrounding community,” stated Sabrina E. Smeltz, CEO of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.

Coleman brings nearly 20 years of experience working with youth and families and has a strong record of delivering high-quality programs that support diverse communities. Prior to joining WBGC, she served as Deputy Director of Community Engagement for New York Edge, where she led a portfolio of programs focused on improving youth academic outcomes, strengthening youth and family wellness, and deepening family and community engagement. She is known for her human-centered, mission-driven leadership style and her commitment to building strong, collaborative teams. She is passionate about creating inclusive environments where staff, members, and families feel seen, supported, and empowered.

WBGC and the Eastern Fairfield County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Partner to Promote Literacy

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) and the Eastern Fairfield County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., have announced a partnership designed to promote literacy, financial literacy, and civic engagement for youth and teens across Fairfield County.

On Monday, January 19, 2026, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, members of the local Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Eastern Fairfield County Chapter will collaborate with the WBGC Southport Keystone Club, a high school youth leadership organization, to launch a community initiative reflecting Dr. King's legacy. Together, these youth leaders will build and install three free “Little Libraries” at new community locations, providing children and teens with access to books they can borrow, read, and return—that encourage literacy, learning, and a love of reading.

“This service event embodies Dr. King’s principles of justice, equality, and community empowerment. By involving youth in service, we honor his legacy and help build a stronger, more connected future,” said Damika Richardson, Community Service Chair, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Eastern Fairfield County Chapter.

The MLK Day of Service is a national call to action that encourages Americans to volunteer and give back to their communities. This year’s event will bring together families, students, and community members to support education and youth development in a truly meaningful way.

The Little Libraries will be installed in Spring 2026 at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Madison Avenue Clubhouse (Bridgeport, CT), the Boys & Girls Club of Danbury, and the Sterling House (Stratford, CT). The organizations will simultaneously conduct a book drive to fill these libraries and fill Little Libraries at additional sites.

Community members are invited to donate new or gently used children’s and young adult books for ages 5-17 to help stock the libraries. Donation bins will be available at the WBGC Southport Clubhouse (385 Center Street, Southport, CT) between January 12 – 19, 2026.

A second component of the partnership is Voices of the Pen, a year-long author series designed to highlight diverse authors of children's literature. The series will foster literacy, creativity, and critical thinking while exposing children to inspirational role models in writing and related disciplines. Confirmed authors for 2026 include Janae Marks, Stefanie Foster Brown, and Dr. Tanya Sharrieff. Dates and additional authors for the series will be announced in Spring 2026.

WBGC Cowboys Celebrate Another Great Season!

On Saturday, December 13, the WBGC Cowboys Tackle Football families held their end-of-season banquet at our Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse. The Cowboys program is about much more than football. Our players have worked hard on AND off the field --They have built a community, attended Cowboy Study Hall, and held team dinners together. A special shout out to the seventh-grade team for competing in the FCFL Championship! Thank you to the parents, coaches, volunteers and donors who helped to make the season such a success. WBGC Holds Its Fall of Fame Gala

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club announced new inductees into its Hall of Fame, an event which takes place once every five years, at the WBGC Hall of Fame Gala at the WBGC Madison Avenue Clubhouse on December 5th, 2025.

Inductees to the WBGC Hall of Fame were nominated by the general public and selected by a committee comprised of WBGC Staff, the WBGC Board of Trustees, and community members. They were selected for their exceptional dedication, leadership and impact within WBGC, the community, and beyond.

The 2025 inductees include: Bradford Evans, Meg Orazio Jean Louis, Raquon Johnson, Mark Kelly, Nick & Patti Makes, Robert Martinez, Molly McHugh, Tom Mindrum, Matt Morgan, and Kevin Simmons.

“Our new class of inductees has played a direct role in the growth and impact of our organization. They have served as volunteers, mentors, trustees, and friends to Wakeman BGC, helping to open the door for Club youth to attain lifelong success,” stated Sabrina E. WBGC Receives Neighborhood Builders Award

Bank of America has named Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club as its 2025 Neighborhood Builders® for their work to expand affordable housing access and prepare students for success, respectively. Bank of America’s signature Neighborhood Builders program continues to be one of the nation’s largest philanthropic investments into nonprofit leadership development, while providing unique multiyear flexible funding annually to high-impact nonprofits in communities nationwide.

These Southern Connecticut nonprofits are each awarded a $200,000 grant over two years, comprehensive leadership training for the organization’s executive director and an emerging leader, and access to a national network of nonprofit peers. Since the program’s inception, 31 nonprofits have been selected as Neighborhood Builders in Southern Connecticut, with the bank investing more than $6.2 million in philanthropic capital into these nonprofits.

“Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club provide essential support and resources that help individuals and families in Southern Connecticut achieve stability and success," said Bill Tommins, president, Bank of America Southern Connecticut. “Flexible funding and comprehensive leadership training will allow these nonprofits to continue connecting residents with safe, affordable homes and prepare Connecticut youth for life beyond the classroom.”

Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven (NHS) provides comprehensive wraparound services that promote sustainable homeownership and help revitalize neighborhoods. By integrating education and community organizing into housing development, NHS fosters long-term stability in neighborhoods throughout Connecticut. Neighborhood Builders funding will support the Creating Community Anchors program, expanding affordable housing through leadership development, cooperative housing planning, and property acquisition.

"This funding will enable us to continue providing homeownership opportunities to low- and moderate-income first-time homebuyers, while keeping our broad scope of services that focus on neighborhood stabilization and community sustainability as vibrant components of our organizational mission," said Jim Paley, executive director, Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven.

Based in Bridgeport, the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) is the first-ever repeat Neighborhood Builder in Southern Connecticut and helps guide and inspire young people to reach their full potential. For over 110 years, WBGC has offered youth programs that focus on academic success, health & wellbeing, character & leadership, and life & workforce readiness. Neighborhood Builders funding will support the organization's Life & Workforce Readiness Program, which connects youth to internships, job shadowing opportunities, and apprenticeships, ensuring they graduate high school with a plan for their future.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) is thrilled to announce new inductees into its Hall of Fame, an event which takes place once every five years.

Inductees will be celebrated at the WBGC Hall of Fame Gala on Friday, December 5 at 6:30 pm at the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse (595 Madison Ave., Bridgeport, CT).

Inductees to the WBGC Hall of Fame were nominated by the general public and selected by a committee comprised of WBGC Staff, the WBGC Board of Trustees, and community members.

Construction Junction Unites Construction, Architecture & Engineering Leaders With Local Youth

Kids, teens and young adults explored careers in the fields of construction, architecture and engineering, met leaders from union and apprenticeship trade programs, and engaged in hands-on projects at the Construction Junction on Wednesday, October 15 at the WBGC Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse .

Sponsored by a collective of industry partners to mark Construction Inclusion Week , participating organizations include Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders, DeWalt Tool Company, EMCOR, Gilbane Building Company, Home Depot, IBEW Local 488, Iron Workers 424, Kafa Group, Northeast, O&G Industries, Turner Construction Company, and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.

Participants also learned about the ACE Mentor Program offered at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, designed to expose high school students to careers in architecture, construction, and engineering, including skilled trades. Mentors from ACE companies, such as Turner, work with the students to complete a culminating architectural project. Through this 15-week program, 30 teens have opportunities for summer externships and college scholarships.

A "Wild" Dinner & A Technology Grant!

Representatives from Comcast were joined by Connecticut State Representative Jennifer Leeper to announce a $15,000 grant to Wakeman Boys & Girls Club to advance digital literacy and expand access to essential technology in Bridgeport.

“We appreciate Comcast’s commitment to Bridgeport and their support of our youth through this generous donation,” said Connecticut State Representative Steve Stafstrom. “In today’s world, digital proficiency is necessary for education, career readiness, and civic engagement. By equipping our youth with the tools and skills they need to succeed, Comcast and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club are helping to level the playing field and open doors to more choices, which every child deserves.”

Comcast’s grant will directly support the Club’s Digital Futures Program, which provides hands-on digital literacy classes, workforce training, and creative technology experiences, such as coding, game design and visual arts. The program also offers job application assistance and STEM-focused mentoring, creating a comprehensive support system that empowers youth to build real-world skills and prepare for future success. In addition, Comcast is donating 50 laptops to enable more Club members to participate in immersive STEM learning.

“Comcast’s generous support is helping us equip Bridgeport’s youth with the tools and training they need to thrive in a tech-driven economy,” said Sabrina Smeltz, Chief Executive Officer of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. “With enhanced STEM programming and access to laptops, our members are exploring new interests, building critical skills, and developing the confidence to grow as the next generation of leaders.”

Carolyne Hannan, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s New England Region, added: “Comcast is proud to be an active part of the Bridgeport community. Together with Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, we’re honored to help more families gain the resources they need to embrace the Internet. This grant reflects our deep commitment to expanding digital opportunity in the communities we serve and to helping people build the skills they need to thrive in today’s connected world.”

The donation is part of Project UP , Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to connect people to the Internet, create digital opportunity, and build a future of unlimited possibilities. This includes programs such as  Internet Essentials , Lift Zones and Digital Navigators . Since 2011, Internet Essentials has connected more than 380,000 low-income Connecticut residents to broadband service at home. Comcast has also launched 32 Lift Zones across the state to provide free, high-speed WiFi and digital skills training at local community centers.

This grant reflects Comcast’s broader investment in Connecticut, including a major infrastructure project currently underway to expand its reliable high-speed network to nearly 62,000 homes and businesses in Bridgeport .

To further celebrate the collaboration, volunteers from Comcast partnered with Sportsman Channel to host a Hunt.Fish.Feed . dinner for Club members and their families. The meal featured venison tacos, showcasing how wild game can be a nutritious and kid-friendly option.

“It’s been a pleasure to partner with Comcast and to engage with members of the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club,” said Sportsman Channel Chef Paul Comes. “The Hunt.Fish.Feed. program has served more than 42,000 meals nationwide, and seeing kids enjoy something new and delicious is rewarding.”

Launched in 2007 by Sportsman Channel, Hunt.Fish.Feed. raises awareness of the ongoing hunger crisis in the United States. Comcast’s support of the program builds on its long-standing commitment to community service and meaningful partnerships.

WBGC Welcomes New Chief Operating Officer

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) has announced that Gregory Dickinson has joined the organization as its Chief Operating Officer (COO). Dickinson will oversee operations at WBGC’s three Clubhouses and two school-based sites across Bridgeport and Fairfield.

Dickinson’s primary responsibilities include overseeing youth programming and out-of-school operations, ensuring financial sustainability, strengthening partnerships with other local organizations and local government, and ensuring safety and risk management best practices.

“We are thrilled to welcome a leader of Greg's caliber to WBGC,” stated Sabrina E. Smeltz, CEO of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. “As we expand our programming into new areas and strive to increase our impact, it is crucial that we continue to operate with excellence and efficiency. Greg will be a key player in ensuring our success,” she added.

Prior to joining WBGC, Dickinson held leadership roles at several non-profit organizations throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. Most recently, he served as the Director of Community Engagement for New York Edge, an after school and summer youth program provider. In this role, Dickinson was responsible for providing senior-level operational oversight to multiple program locations throughout metropolitan New York City. With Greg's support, his portfolio of sites consistently exceeded quality service standards and stakeholder relationship expectations.

Throughout his career in non-profit leadership, Greg has been driven by a passion to build strong teams, to prioritize collaborative leadership, to cultivate trusting relationships, and to develop programs that support the holistic needs of young people and their families.

"I am excited about the opportunity to join Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, an organization with such a rich and respected history. I look forward to working with an amazing team of leaders to continue supporting youth and families of the greater Bridgeport and Fairfield communities," stated Dickinson.

WBGC Goes Over The Edge in 2025!

WBGC will host its annual Over The Edge urban rappelling event on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at the M&T Bank Headquarters (850 Main Street) in Bridgeport, CT.

The event will feature participants rappelling down the side of the 248-foot-tall building to support WBGC’s programs that promote academic success, health & wellbeing, character & leadership, and life & workforce readiness.

Participation in the event is open to the public and no rappelling experience is needed. Training will be provided on the day of the event. Those under 18 must have a signed waiver from a parent or guardian to participate. Participants have historically represented different groups: youth members and their families, long-time friends and supporters of WBGC, sponsors, and pure thrill seekers. It will be a fun day of cheering on participants, with food, music and kids’ activities.

WBGC hopes to raise $100,000 at this year’s event. Participants are asked to raise $1000 in advance of their rappel. Teams may also be formed to pool their raised funds and increase their impact.

In the spirit of Halloween, participants can choose to wear a costume as part of their rappelling experience.

“This is always one of our favorite events,” stated Sarah Motti, Director of Development for WBGC. “It’s a thrilling experience for the rappelers and has a tremendous impact on our Club youth. We hope the community will come out to support us,” she added.

Congratulations to Caroline G. and Jack S. from our Southport Clubhouse! Caroline and Jack are both recipients of a $5,000 Judgement Free Generation(r) Scholarship from Planet Fitness.

Since 2017, Planet Fitness has annually awarded scholarships to deserving teens who model the judgement free, pro-kindness, and anti-bullying values for which Planet Fitness and Boys & Girls Clubs of America collectively stand. These scholarships recognize youth who are passionate about promoting kindness and inclusion in their communities. This year, Planet Fitness provided 50 high school seniors from around the U.S. with these scholarships that directly support their post-secondary education.

Through a multi-tiered review process, scholarship recipients were selected based on multiple criteria including a personal essay, staff recommendation and video submission. Each piece of the submission helped showcase how participants actively advocate for kindness and acceptance through the demonstration of Judgement Free values.

Caroline stated, "My 11 years at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club shaped me into a mentor, leader, and role model. From Torch Club to Co-President of Keystone, I developed communication, collaboration, and leadership skills that I now carry into every role. Wakeman BGC empowered me to lead with compassion, listen with empathy, and support others."

"Winning the Planet Fitness Judgement Free Generation Scholarship will enable me to pursue my dream of a career in global public health policy. With this support, I can focus on roles that align with my passion for health equity and community impact, worrying less about financial constraints. The award also empowers me to continue to work to promote kindness and belonging in all communities," added Caroline.

Jack stated, "Being judgement free is the foundation for an inclusive and collaborative society. It's the key to understanding differences and broadening your horizons. All of these characteristics help to create a better society for our future."

Apple and WBGC Offer Coding and Creativity Programming, Preparing CT Youth for Future Workforce

In collaboration with Apple, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is offering coding and creativity programming, helping prepare Fairfield & Bridgeport youth for careers of today and tomorrow and equipping them with critical workforce skills, including creativity, coding, problem solving, and teamwork.

“At Apple, education is in our DNA—and we know technology can open doors to new opportunities and give students the tools to pursue their dreams,” said Stacy Erb, director of Apple’s Community Education Initiative. “We’re thrilled to continue supporting the incredible work taking place at Boys & Girls Clubs across the U.S. to help inspire creativity and prepare today’s young people with the skills they need to succeed in cutting-edge careers.”

Coreen Ahmad, Director of Character & Leadership Initiatives for WBGC, stated, “As part of our commitment to STEAM education, our Club youth have learned to code using Swift Playgrounds and Xcode and have had opportunities to participate in a variety of programs and special events, including a trip for our teens to learn at Apple Fifth Avenue in NYC.”

In December 2021, Apple announced it was teaming up with Boys & Girls Clubs in more than a dozen U.S cities to bring coding with Swift to tens of thousands of students across the country. Since then, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club has launched new programming for local youth, including after-school and summer learning opportunities. Participants use iPad and Apple’s coding and creativity resources to gain new skills, explore art and design, and pursue their passions.

“Our Keystone and Torch teen leadership clubs focus on how to use Apple technology to explore and build workforce skills,” Ahmad explained. “Additionally, Club youth use the technology to focus on literacy, including compound words, Word Webby Award speeches, and weather reports.”

“We held a Showcase during our annual Hand in Hand awards, which over 300 community members attended. The Showcase included a video of creative and coding work, and Apple technology in use, by Club kids. Attendees also had the opportunity to experiment with the apps and explore the work we have completed,” added Ahmad.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s collaboration with Apple is part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America Innovate, an initiative dedicated to bringing coding and creativity programming to Clubs across the U.S and Germany. To date, this initiative has engaged hundreds of educators and served more than 15,000 young people.

Hand in Hand 2025 Celebrates Club and Community

The fourth Annual Hand in Hand Celebration, held on April 28, 2025 at the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse , honored the Youth of the Year and awarded community members for their achievements.

Over 300 friends of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club gathered to recognize members of the Club and community for their achievements during the 2024-25 school year. WBGC Teens Advocate For Youth Gambling Education

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club teen members across all three Clubhouses – Southport, Madison Avenue, and Smilow-Burroughs, participated in a project funded by The Capital Region Education Council (CREC) to bring awareness of problem gambling to youth in CT. The Public Service videos explore the dangers of online gambling, peer pressure, ease of access and the aggressive targeting of youth through social media ads. Our teen participants felt empowered to become advocates for education regarding youth gambling. We are grateful for CREC, the CSDE, The Hub and Take Part Theatre for the support of this project..

Northeast Regional Torch Club Summit Draws 270+ Teens and Advisors

More than 270 teens and advisors from Boys & Girls Clubs across the Northeast attended the Northeast Regional Torch Club Summit at the WBGC Southport Clubhouse on Saturday, March 29. Teens from six states (NY, NY, NH, MA, RI and CT) had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and workshops, share experiences and explore opportunities for personal and Club growth.

Presenters from organizations across Fairfield County, including Mystic Aquarium, Sacred Heart University, Apple educators, Synchrony Bank, Silver Hill Hospital, other Boys & Girls Clubs, and many more, shared their learnings and experiences with the teens.

This conference was presented by the Southport Clubhouse Keystone Club with support from the Connecticut Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs & CT BGC Professional Association.

WBGC Names 2025 Youth of the Year

Avery Pfenning Will Continue to State Competition

Selected from six exceptional youth, Avery Pfenning of Fairfield, CT has been named Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) Youth of the Year. Pfenning will receive a college scholarship from WBGC and will go on to contend for the Connecticut Youth of the Year title.

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Club of America’s signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders, fully prepared to live and lead in a diverse, global and integrated world economy.

For more than 75 years, the program has recognized young people for their outstanding leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to health and wellbeing. Because it allows the teen to represent hundreds of youths from their organization, Youth of the Year is the highest honor given by a Boys & Girls Club.

Over her eight years as a WBGC member, Pfenning has made significant contributions to the culture and programs at the Southport Clubhouse. She has been a member of the Keystone Club for the past three years, is currently the Co-Vice President, and represented WBGC at the National Keystone Conference as a delegate in 2024. She is also the co-creator of Brain Boosters, a targeted learning program for WBGC’s After School Program participants.

A current junior at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, she loves art, running, and yoga. She volunteers at the Caroline House and is a mentor at Riverfield Elementary School in Fairfield, CT.

“I have been a part of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club since the third grade, and it has had a significant impact on my personal growth. It has always provided me with a place where I can be myself while also teaching me valuable leadership skills,” commented Pfenning.

“Through programs like Keystone, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with other teens and mentors who have encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, develop confidence, and take initiative. The supportive and welcoming environment at Wakeman BGC has not only helped me grow as a leader but has also given me a sense of belonging. It has shaped me into a more driven and community-focused individual, empowering me to be a leader in all aspects of my life,” she added.

Coreen Ahmad, Wakeman BGC Director of Character & Leadership Initiatives, has worked closely with Pfenning at the Southport Clubhouse and at the national organization level. “Avery is a dedicated volunteer to both our Club and in her community, and serves as a role model for other teens and younger Club members. She lights up any room with her positivity and energy,” said Ahmad.

“I believe Avery has sought and found a balance in her education, work, volunteering and interests that has strengthened her skills and knowledge, as well as helping so many around her. These traits and more make Avery the Youth of the Year,” Ahmad added.

Other WBGC Youth of the Year Finalists include Oshane C. and Nathan P. from the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse, Allison B. and Audrey P. from the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, and Peyton H. from the Southport Clubhouse.

A WBGC Junior Youth of the Year, aged 10-13, will also be announced later this month.

The Connecticut Youth of the Year will contend for the title of Northeast Regional Youth of the Year and the opportunity to secure an additional college scholarship. Six regional finalists will advance to the National Youth of the Year event in October 2025 to vie for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year.

WBGC thanks its community leaders who served as judges for the competition. This year’s judges include Alli Ganim, Barbara Hernandez, Anthony Johnson, Ginny Kazzi, Howard E. Kelly, Tonisha Cohen-King, Tracy Keblish, Leslie LaSala, Neeraj Mehta, Darshan Shah, Julie Smith, Reginald St. Fortcolin, Jacqueline Stevens, Najie Sumra, and Julie Tremaglio.

Pfenning and the Youth of the Year finalists will be honored at the 2025 Hand in Hand Ceremony on Monday, April 28th at the WBGC Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse (595 Madison Avenue). The event also highlights the contributions of other youth and community members.

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys & Girls Clubs of America's premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members.

Each year, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club names two Youth of the Year from each Clubhouse. These extraordinary members serve as exemplary ambassadors for WBGC youth and lend their strong voices to all of our Club's young people.

The following six youth, two from each Clubhouse, have been selected as finalists for WBGC's Youth of the Year . The winner will go on to contend for the Connecticut Youth of the Year title. The journey then continues to the Northeast Regional Youth of the Year, and ultimately six finalists will advance to the National Youth of the Year event to vie for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year.

Nate P. (Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse)

Nate is a senior at Bassick High School in Bridgeport, CT, where he has lived for 17 years. Highly motivated and community-driven, Nate is passionate about making a positive impact on those around him. He enjoys playing basketball, making music, and is an avid video game player. During his time at Wakeman BGC, Nate has demonstrated strong leadership qualities, showing great potential to become an influential leader in the future.

Oshane C. (Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse)

Oshane is currently a junior at Bridgeport Central High School in Bridgeport, CT, where he has lived since moving from Ocho Rios, Jamaica. His passion for sports drives his ambition to pursue a career in physical therapy, with the goal of helping athletes reach their full potential. As the middle child, Oshane is dedicated to being a positive role model for both his brother and sister, always striving to set a strong example for them.

Audrey B. (Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse)

Audrey is a stellar student, exhibits leadership skills, and empowers members within the Clubhouse, school and within her community. Audrey is a track and field star, a crochet master, artist, Live Girl leader, 100 Girls Leading leader, and volunteer guru within the Clubhouse. Audrey's compassion, resilience and service to her community make her a true leader now and in the future. Audrey plans to attend college to pursue a career in nursing.

Allison P. (Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse)

Allison has displayed resilience since joining the Clubhouse, overcoming hurdles and obstacles during her life which most young people her age could not survive. Allison has stayed focused and has obtained job experience by joining the WBGC Workplace Readiness program. She is focused on her grades and hopes to attend college to pursue a career related to animals because of her love of cats.

Avery P. (Southport Clubhouse)

Avery has attended Wakeman BGC since she was 8 years old, attending the After School Program (ASP) and participating in a variety of classes and sports programs. She has been in Keystone Club for the past three years and has been past Parliamentarian and current Co Vice President. As a VP, she is responsible to keep others motivated to complete their service hours and attend meetings. Besides attending Fairfield Ludlowe High School, she loves to run and do art and enjoys yoga. She was the co-creator of Brain Boosters, a targeted learning program for our ASP members. She also currently volunteers at the Caroline House and at Riverfield Elementary School as a mentor. Avery was also a summer camp counselor and won staff of the week. Avery attended the National Keystone Conference as a delegate in 2024 and was selected to apply for the National Steering Committee in 2025.

Peyton H. (Southport Clubhouse)

Peyton has been a member of WBGC for almost nine years, attending the After School Program and participating in sports and the arts programming. She eventually joined Torch and Keystone leadership clubs and began to give back to the club and community. Peyton is currently the Co-Treasurer, Fitness Program Chair, and past Parliamentarian of the Southport Keystone Club. She received the award for Keystone member of the year last year. Peyton was a delegate to the national Keystone Conference in 2024 and brings energy to every meeting and service project. Outside the Club, you can find her cooking, baking or going on walks.

Proceeds of "Run Across Connecticut" to Benefit WBGC

Creator and runner of the 150 mile "Run Across Connecticut" hopes to inspire others to become the best version of themselves.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is excited to announce it will be the beneficiary for the “Run Across Connecticut” (RACT), an inaugural running event taking place on Saturday, April 5 ^th and Sunday, April 6 ^th . The event features Evan Titus, a 25-year-old accomplished runner from Norwalk, CT, running for 150 consecutive miles diagonally across the state of Connecticut for an estimated 24-26 hours. Titus’ goal is to raise $15,000 for Wakeman Boys & Girls Club through donations and event sponsorships.

The Run Across CT will be more than twice as long as Titus’ previous longest run of 62 consecutive miles – a true test of willpower, preparation, and execution. The race will begin in East Thompson, CT, and will finish at the New York border of Greenwich, CT. Titus will make a stop at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Southport Clubhouse (385 Center Street, Southport, CT) on Sunday, April 6 as part of his route.

Titus, also the creator of the event, explained, “I’ve always wanted to become a person that others can look up to. This challenge embodies what I learned and what I want to pass on to the next generation. My goal is to inspire the people around me, and to be a light people can follow to become the best versions of themselves.”

Titus added, “I chose to support Wakeman Boys & Girls Club because the organization embodies the principles that are important to me: courage, learning, and growth. Partnering together, we will strive to create positive relationships with health, fitness, and learning, and provide an inspiration for kids in our local community to challenge themselves mentally and physically.”

Titus is currently a certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, and sports performance coach who works with middle school, high school, and college athletes in a variety of sports. He previously attended St. Bonaventure University and played on their rugby team, and served as captain of both the wrestling and rugby teams at Fairfield College Preparatory School in Fairfield, CT. His running journey began in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic led to cancellation of his college rugby season. Since his first training run, Evan has completed 2 marathons and 3 ultra marathons, varying in distance from 50K (31 miles), to 50 miles, to 100K (62 miles).

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to guide and inspire young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible people. With three Clubhouses and two school-based sites across Fairfield and Bridgeport, the organization serves over 4,000 youth annually and offers a range of programs based on Academic Success, Health & Well Being, Character & Leadership, and Life & Workforce Readiness.

A series of events will take place at WBGC leading up to the RACT, including .5K runs for Club kids, programming for WBGC’s teen leadership clubs, and more.

WBGC Cowboys Celebrate Great Season

On Saturday, December 14, the WBGC Cowboys held their end-of-season banquet at our Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse. The Cowboys program is about much more than football. Our players have worked hard on AND off the field. They have built a community, attended Cowboy Study Hall, and team dinners together. And they have built skills in teamwork, discipline, perseverance, goal setting, and the ability to handle success and failure. Thank you to the parents, coaches, volunteers and donors who helped to make the season such a success. Go Cowboys!

Construction Junction Exposes Young Adults to ACE Careers

Teens and young adults explored careers in the fields of construction, architecture and engineering, met leaders from union and apprenticeship trade programs, and engaged in hands-on projects at the Construction Junction on Wednesday, November 6at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse.

Sponsored by a collective of industry partners to mark Construction Inclusion Week, participating organizations included Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders, DeWalt, Gilbane Building Company, IBEW Local 468, Iron Workers 424, Kafa Group, O&G Industries and Turner Construction in addition to Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.

The event was free and open to young people aged 13-25 along with family members.

“The Construction Junction directly supports our goal to help young people achieve positive outcomes in Life & Workforce Readiness. We are excited to bring together industry leaders and our local youth to provide mentorship and to explore careers in these fields,” commented Sabrina E. Smeltz, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club CEO.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) hosted its annual Over The Edge urban rappelling event on October 26, 2024 at the M&T Bank Headquarters (850 Main Street) in Bridgeport, CT.

The event featured participants rappelling down the side of the 248-foot-tall building to support WBGC in delivering programs that promote academic success, healthy lifestyles and character & leadership.

To date, the event has raised over $95K for WBGC and it's not too late to give!

WBGC Celebrates Opening of ASML STEM Lab & Makerspace

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of the ASML STEM Lab & Makerspace at its Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse on Thursday, October 17.

The new STEM Lab & Makerspace was funded by ASML, a leading supplier to the semiconductor industry. ASML, which is headquartered in the Netherlands, has a significant presence in Connecticut with more than 3,000 people employed at its R&D and manufacturing site in Wilton, Conn. The STEM Lab at WBGC was funded through a grant from ASML of $659,000, to be disbursed over three years. The Club will use the funds to equip the Lab with all necessary materials and supplies; to provide WBGC staff members with STEM-related professional development; and to send students on STEM-focused field trips. As part of the company’s support, ASML employees have committed to volunteering at the site.

“Our partnership with ASML is extremely important to us and to our community,” commented Sabrina E. Smeltz, CEO of WBGC. “We know that STEM education and access to technology is crucial to ensure our young people have the tools they need for the future.”

STEM programming at WBGC spans a range of disciplines, from computer science, coding and robotics to hydroponics and greenhouse gardening. Tech equipment in the Lab that students at WBGC now have access to include 3D printers, laser engraver printers, microscopes, robotics kits, drones and more.

Smeltz added: “This collaboration directly supports our goal to help young people achieve positive outcomes in the areas of academic success and life and workforce readiness.”

Many of ASML’s community partnerships aim to increase the STEM/technical talent pool, which society relies on to solve some of its key challenges. ASML’s commitment to being a valued partner in the communities in which it operates, specifically through education, is longstanding. In Connecticut, ASML’s support of WBGC follows the expansion of its technology education program, the ASML Junior Academy, to the United States. With partner Mad Science, the ASML Junior Academy provides free interactive technology education lessons to children ages 4 to 12 at schools in Wilton and surrounding communities.

“ASML is committed to raising awareness among students of STEM-related career paths,” said Louis Lu, head of ASML’s Wilton site. “The educational and enriching programming at the ASML STEM Lab & Makerspace will give local youth access to and training on high-tech tools, and, perhaps, spark an interest that one day leads to a fulfilling career in STEM.”

WBGC Holds Two Fun-Filled Day For Kids Events

The Board of Trustees serves as the Club’s governing entity and consists of individuals of good character who are sincerely committed to the philosophy, mission, and ideals of the organization. All corporate powers are managed by, or under the direction of, the Board of Trustees.

Stacey Cardenas

Stacey has dedicated much of her life to philanthropic efforts focused on young people and education. She currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Food for Neighbors and has served on the boards of the Bridgeport Rescue Mission and Dwight Elementary School PTA. She has also held leadership and volunteer roles for the Junior League of Eastern Fairfield County, National Charity League, Tomlinson Middle School PTA, Black Rock Church, and Community Bible Study. Stacey previously practiced law in Pennsylvania after receiving her JD from the University of North Carolina and worked in commercial real estate finance after receiving her BS in Finance from the University of Virginia.

Tracy Keblish

Tracy is an accomplished executive leader with over 18 years of client management and strategic partnership experience in the financial services industry. She is currently an Executive Director at J.P. Morgan focused on the Commercial Card payments business. Tracy currently volunteers at Operation Hope and was a founding member of SASO (Scholars and Athletes Serving Others). In addition she spent 10+ years as a USA Swim Official and a volunteer for the Westport YMCA swim team. She holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Hartford and an MBA from New York University (Stern).

Chad McCullough

As VP / General Manager at Turner Construction Company, Chad provides executive-level leadership and management for Turner’s Connecticut Business Unit where he oversees sales, operations, personnel, and financial management. Chad enjoys educating young people about all the exciting opportunities the Architecture, Construction and Engineering fields offer. He is also involved in several community and professional organizations. Chad holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Cornell University and resides in Fairfield, CT with his wife and two children.

WBGC is going Over The Edge!

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) will host its annual Over The Edge urban rappelling event on October 26, 2024 at the M&T Bank Headquarters (850 Main Street) in Bridgeport, CT.

The event will feature participants rappelling down the side of the 248-foot-tall building to support WBGC in delivering programs that promote academic success, healthy lifestyles and character & leadership.

Participation in the event is open to the public and no rappelling experience is needed. Training will be provided the day of the event. Those under 18 must have a signed waiver from a parent or guardian to participate. Participants have historically represented different groups: youth members and their families, long-time friends and supporters, sponsors, and pure thrill seekers. It will be a fun day of cheering on participants, with food, music and more.

Participants are asked to raise $1000 in advance of their rappel. Teams may also be formed to pool their raised funds and increase their impact.

In the spirit of Halloween, participants can choose to wear a costume and participate in a costume contest as part of their rappelling experience.

“Our goal is to raise $100,000 for Wakeman BGC’s kids,” stated Sarah Motti, Director of Development for WBGC. “We hope to see both returning and new faces out there this year. It’s a life-changing experience for our rappelers, and the funds we raise will directly support our programs,” Motti added.

Hello From Earth!

Through our partnership with ASML , our Madison Avenue summer campers had the opportunity to talk to NASA astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps LIVE as part of their camp experience! Epps launched into space in early 2024 on a SpaceX flight to the International Space Station. Aligned with our mission to provide exposure to STEM themes and careers, campers were able to engage directly with Epps and ask questions about her career and experiences in space.

We thank ASML and the Space for Humanity program for helping us connect our campers with outer space!

Caroline S Awarded The Judgement Free Generation Scholarship From Planet Fitness

A member of our Keystone Club and an active participant in other WBGC programs, Caroline was also selected by her high school classmates as “the one who is most likely to brighten your day.”

Caroline stated, "Kindness is the light that turns judgment into understanding. When we shine that light, we create a world where everyone can feel valued and free to be their true selves."

We wish Caroline much success as she embarks on the next chapter of her life as a freshman at Santa Clara University!

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Applies For 2025 Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is thrilled to announce that we have applied for the 2025 Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant in partnership with Fairfield Public Schools to expand the support provided through the Great Futures After School Program at McKinley Elementary School in Fairfield which is a Title 1 School.

The objective of the Great Futures After School Program is to provide a robust, interactive, dynamic, and inclusive experience for McKinley students. Participants will be excited to remain at school after hours, parents will take great comfort in their children being provided safe, affordable, enriching care. The Great Futures After School Program is designed to complement the school day but also to provide additional components that are not typically covered in class but contribute to everyone’s growth - learning about the world around them as well as learning about themselves. Currently, 45 students attend the After School Program at no cost to families since 2021 through a five-year 21st CCLC grant. The 2025 21st CCLC grant would extend the no-cost program to additional low-income families.

School faculty will see their classes strengthened by students who are more excited to come to school and better supported during out of school time. Club and school personnel have a 19-year history of collaborating to support students and families. We appreciate the opportunity to receive funding through 21st CCLC and the Connecticut State Department of Education.

Southport Clubhouse Kids Create a Greenhouse Through Mystic Research STEM Mentoring Grant

Through a STEM Mentoring Program grant from the Mystic Aquarium/Sea Research Foundation, volunteers and Southport Clubhouse kids have created a fully functioning greenhouse at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Southport! The grant is funded through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

Clubhouse kids participated in the greenhouse assembly as well as the planting of seeds and seedlings. The greenhouse will be utilized year-round, with plants rotated in based on the season.

The project currently features an extensive range of vegetables and herbs, including pumpkins, corn, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, basil, and mint among many others. The goal is to for program participants to use these ingredients to prepare a meal this fall. Later this year, participants will plant sweet potatoes, onions and beets.

The physical structure of 195 square feet includes four solar-powered fans and an entrance floor fabricated from reclaimed thirty-year-old Warren Gymnasium floorboards.

The project aligns with Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s core values of Academic Success and Healthy Lifestyles, providing STEM engagement for kids K-12.

“Over the last three years, our kids have helped to plant over 800 plants on our Southport campus, including pollinators, herbs, and our sensory gardens,” explained Executive Director Tim Cepetelli. “This greenhouse project is like an outdoor classroom, providing even more opportunities for our youth to learn about urban agriculture, solar energy, the water cycle, and the scientific method.”

“It’s a way for kids to find connection to themselves, as well as to nature,” Cepetelli added while guiding visitors through the greenhouse with Janice Mayeran, the Club’s summer greenhouse staff and a retired physical education and health teacher. “Whether kids have access to other gardens at home or at school, or this is the first opportunity they’ve had to engage with gardens in this way, many studies have shown getting your hands dirty can help with stress reduction along with positive impacts on mental and physical health,” he added.

Soil for the project was donated by We Care Denali, LLC of Fairfield, and a grant from GroMoreGood ™ helped to fund the initial start-up costs of outfitting the greenhouse’s interior. The greenhouse project was also partially funded by the After School Program and Summer Camp STEM budgets. Mary Hogue of Sustainable Fairfield has lent considerable guidance throughout the Southport campus’ three year green evolution, including the greenhouse’s creation.

The Club welcomes donations of quality tools, pots, wheelbarrows and other gardening supplies to further the greenhouse’s growth and impact for local kids.

DeLuca Early Learning Center to Open August 12

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is excited to announce the opening of the DeLuca Early Learning Center (ELC) at its Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse on August 12, 2024. The ELC will be a twelve-month, full-day program for children ages 3-5.

The Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse opened to the community in October 2023, joining the two existing Southport and Smilow-Burroughs Wakeman Boys & Girls Clubhouses. The clubhouses are committed to providing a safe space and an inspiring environment for youth and teens, with a focus on academic success, healthy lifestyles, and character & leadership.

The ELC is significant in that it expands the scope of Wakeman Boys & Girls programming to youth in the 3–5-year-old age range, providing an opportunity for younger children to benefit from the WBGC experience.

“The North End faces a shortage of preschools, healthcare facilities, and out-of-school programs. The Center will help to fill this gap for the community by providing a quality early learning center in a safe, convenient, and modern facility,” commented Sabrina Smeltz, CEO of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.

The Early Learning Center will feature state-of-the-art classrooms designed for hands-on learning. Additionally, an outdoor classroom will encourage natural discovery, curiosity and healthy lifestyles. The teaching staff has specialized educational training, and the curriculum will follow CT Early Learning Standards promoting skills in math, science, social-emotional learning, creative arts and language.

Participants will also utilize the clubhouse’s brand-new amenities, including its gymnasiums, black box theatre and STEAM-based resources, as part of their ELC experience.

Shandra Patton, Director of Early Learning, stated, “The primary goal of our Early Learning Center is to prepare students for kindergarten, aligned with Wakeman BGC’s core value of academic success. We are the third Boys & Girls Club in the state to feature an early learning facility on-site, highlighting our commitment to early childhood education in the community.”

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club accepts Care 4 Kids; weekly tuition fees will be determined on a sliding scale. Students do not need to reside in Bridgeport to participate.

The third Annual Hand in Hand Celebration held on May 6, 2024 at the Madison Avenue Community Clubhous e honored the Youth of the Year and awarded community members for their achievements in academics, health and fitness, and character and leadership.

Over 300 friends of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club gathered to recognize members of the Club and community for their achievements during the 2023-24 school year. Board members, sponsors, donors, and local government leaders were also present to witness the tremendous impact their support has on our kids and teens.

New Unit Advisory Council Announced for Madison Avenue Clubhouse

Council Will Build Community and Increase Clubhouse Impact

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse (595 Madison Avenue) has launched a new Unit Advisory Council to build community support and integration, and to help ensure a healthy, happy and safe Clubhouse. The Council is composed of a diverse range of volunteers who have demonstrated a commitment to serving Wakeman Boys & Clubs and youth in the community, including:

· Marjorie A. Cable: Principal, Geraldine Johnson Elementary School

· Howard Kelly: Director, Webster Bank

· William King: ESL Teacher and Freshman Boys Basketball Coach, Central High School

Through monthly meetings and regular collaboration with Carlos Collazo, the Unit Executive Director of the Madison Avenue Clubhouse, the Advisory Council will serve as Wakeman Boys & Girls Club ambassadors to the community at large and will help monitor and strengthen Wakeman’s programs and services. The Council follows a successful model already in place at the Smilow-Burroughs and Southport Club locations.

The new Council has already helped to facilitate the Webster Bank/Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Finance Lab, a program created to provide students the skills needed for financial empowerment and future financial well-being, as well as the Keystone Club Teen Leadership Program and an urban farming initiative for Madison Avenue Clubhouse participants.

"Our Unit Advisory Council members are dedicated to youth development and fostering positive change in the North End/Hollow Communities and beyond. They have been instrumental in supporting initiatives centered around Financial Literacy, STREAM, and Teen Engagement. Together, these initiatives are making a difference for over 50 club members. We have also partnered up with Al's Millennium Academy of Hair to provide our club members with FREE haircuts bi-monthly," stated Carlos Collazo.

Eileen Blees, Chair of the Madison Avenue Clubhouse Unit Advisory Council, stated, “The Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse is incredibly fortunate to have this group of individuals so willing to join our Advisory Council. Their enthusiasm for all the great things that can be done in and for the community was evident from our very first meeting together.”

“They all see the arrival of the Madison Avenue Clubhouse as fulfilling a much-needed positive vision in the community. They see it as a beacon of hope for the neighborhood kids and their families. The Advisory Council members, including myself, recognize that so much good can happen here at the Club; and as Club Ambassadors, we all look forward to helping spread this hope and light throughout the community,” Blees added.

The first Northeast Regional Keystone Conference in over ten years was held at Boys & Girls Club Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse on Sunday, April 7. The “Spring Into Action” Conference brought together over 260 Keystone Club members from across the Northeast to engage in meaningful discussions, share experiences, and explore opportunities for personal and collective growth.

The Conference was completely planned and implemented by teens in the Keystone Club Program, featuring leadership sessions, art and STEM activities, financial literacy training, career exploration, mental health workshops, fitness, and more.

Keystone Club is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s signature leadership program for teens ages 14 to 18. Each local Keystone Club is an affiliate of the National Keystone Program. Keystone is designed to help teens learn about important issues and take action, to practice leadership, and to have fun doing good. Areas of focus include community service, academic success and career preparation.

Claire Russell, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club 2024 Youth of the Year, stated, “As a teen involved in the Keystone program, I can't stress enough the importance of leadership opportunities. Planning the regional Keystone Club Conference isn't just about organizing an event; it's about creating a platform where we can grow and make a difference. These conferences give us the chance to connect with peers, explore issues that matter to us, and develop skills that will help us succeed both now and in the future.”

Claire Russell Will Advance to State Competition

Selected from 10 exceptional youth, Claire was named Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year and will go on to contend for the Connecticut Youth of the Year title and a $2,500 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

For more than 75 years, the National Youth of the Year program has recognized young people for their outstanding leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to health and wellbeing. Because it allows the teen to represent the hundreds of youth from their organization, Youth of the Year is the highest honor given by a Boys & Girls Club.

Boys & Girls Clubs understand that having a place to belong and someone who believes in you can have a powerful impact. The 2024 Wakeman BGC Youth of the Year is a shining example of this and exemplifies what it means to be a Club kid. Over her 7 years as a member, Claire has continued to use the full Club Experience to dream bigger and reach higher:

"Without Wakeman, I wouldn't have discovered my love for public speaking or my dedication to community service, and I wouldn't have found the courage to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor. Southport Clubhouse Youth of the Year

At Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, Claire has flourished as a leader and Club advocate. An active member of the Torch and then Keystone Club, she took on prominent roles as secretary, treasurer, and vice president. Both near and far, Claire has positively impacted the experience of countless peers: she is one of only 14 teens nationwide to be selected as a Boys & Girls Clubs of America President Circle Brand Ambassador and was also chosen to work with a team of 10 teens to plan the 2023 National Keystone Conference for over 2,000 students. When she reflects on her favorite things about her home Club, she notes the camaraderie among members and the unwavering support from mentors that transforms Wakeman BGC into a family.

Claire is a junior at the Hopkins School, where she has been able to balance her academic excellence with her commitment to Wakeman BGC. At school, she holds leadership roles on many advisory boards and service committees and participates on the varsity soccer, basketball, and tennis teams. Most rewarding for Claire is her involvement in the Hopkins Pathfinder Program, where she serves as a Teacher Assistant for a 7 ^th grade science class and a mentor to the underprivileged students who make up the partner school’s demographic.

As Youth of the Year, Claire will use her leadership and advocacy skills to inspire and empower other youth to recognize their potential. She is especially passionate about promoting educational opportunities: “[In the Hopkins Pathfinder Program], I encountered countless eager young minds who wanted to learn to the fullest but weren’t given the opportunity. The unfortunate reality was that systemic barriers hindered their educational journey. This experience–along with realizing the power of using my platform as National Ambassador for BGCA to make a meaningful impact–has made me determined to be a force for change.”

Wakeman BGC Program Director, Coreen Ahmad, has worked closely with Claire at the Club and National Organization levels. She says, “Claire takes on any challenge with enthusiasm and takes it to the next level. She motivates others around her, including me, to be a better version of ourselves and to try new things. She inspires and leaves a positive influence and lasting impact on her club and community. Taking on the National Keystone Conference is a huge undertaking, but she is there willingly and ready to do whatever it takes.”

Among many other notable accomplishments, Claire is a certified EMT, a female caddy, a Hopkins Science Olympiad Medalist, has been involved in cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and is a part of Hopkins Authentic Research Program which is a selective lab-based class. Her goal after high school is to study medicine and become a neurosurgeon.

If Claire is named the Connecticut Youth of the Year, she will contend for the title of Northeast Regional Youth of the Year who will receive an additional $20,000 college scholarship. Six regional finalists will advance to the National Youth of the Year event in October 2024, to vie for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive an additional scholarship of $50,000.

Cyan is a Junior at Fairfield Ludlowe High School and has been a part of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club for 10 Years. She has been involved with Keystone Club, helping with volunteering, taking pictures as Historian, and attending the National Keystone Conference in Texas. She planned and ran the College and Career Fair two years in a row with 60 presenters and over 200 teens. Cyan is currently in the position of Co-Vice President and hopes to inspire teens to self-advocate and work together. She continues to be an important part of Wakeman BGC as she works as a Staff Member during the school year andsummer. Cyan is a high-honors student. She also plays varsity soccer, varsity indoor, and varsity outdoor track, as well as CFC club soccer.

Building Great Futures

110 Years

On Christmas Day in 1913 the best gift ever given to tens of thousands of children was "unwrapped" when the Wakeman Boys Club opened on Harbor Road in Southport. The opening of the Club was made possible thanks to the generosity of Frances and Cornelia Wakeman Crapo, whose charitable donation established the Club in honor of their grandfather, Jessup Wakeman.

In 1954, having outgrown the original clubhouse, Wakeman Boys Club moved to Center Street in Southport and grew to host more than 300 members. Under the direction of Edward "Red” Baker who took over the reins in 1945, Wakeman became the place to play baseball, football, and basketball.

The impact that Red had on generations of young people was legendary. Alumni still tell stories of piling into Red’s station wagon and driving to other Boys Clubs around the state to play games against anyone who would accept the Wakeman challenge! Boxing, photography, pool, ping pong and skittle bowl were also very popular with the members. Red and his staff-- including Joe Skubas and Art Donnelly--fostered a "home away from home” atmosphere but tolerated no nonsense from members. To own a Wakeman membership card was a privilege, not a birthright!

Membership of the Club continued to grow through the years...

While girls had always been welcome at Wakeman, the word "girls” was officially added to the Club’s name in 1983.

In the late 1980’s with current Executive Director Dave Blagys at the helm, membership approached 1,000 boys and girls.

In 1992, a capital campaign led to an expansion project to add the Warren Gym and some other improved program space.

Membership grew steadily and in 2005, a second capital campaign added a computer center, art studio, weight room, turf field, lobby and parking lot. Membership had climbed to 3,000 boys and girls!

The staff, Board of Directors, and Trustees then focused on serving youth in other sections of Fairfield, and the Stratfield Clubhouse opened in 2003 at Owen Fish Park before moving to the First Presbyterian Church. The Stratfield Clubhouse provided children in grades 3-8 with much of the same enriching programming available at the Southport Clubhouse. The Stratfield Clubhouse closed in June 2014 to maximize Wakeman BGC's positive impact on area youth through the organization's own facilities.

From the success of the Stratfield Clubhouse came an initiative at McKinley Elementary School in Fairfield. Since its inception in 2005, this award winning program has grown from after-school enrichment programming and mentoring by teen volunteers to the school's sole provider of Before & After School Care. In 2018, a Mentoring Program based on the successful McKinley model was implemented at Holland Hill Elementary School in Fairfield.

As Wakeman Boys & Girls Club grew its footprint to serve all areas of the town of Fairfield, the Board and Staff made a commitment to bring the Club's safe spaces and enriching programs to the neighboring city of Bridgeport. In June 2011, the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse on Fairfield Avenue opened its doors to the youth of the West End and Black Rock sections of the city. The building was made possible thanks to the efforts of a dedicated campaign committee and generous donors who contributed $7M to make the project a reality.

Eager to replicate the success of Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, the City of Bridgeport approached Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in 2016 to establish a partnership to replace the condemned North End Boys & Girls Club facility on Madison Avenue. After 7 years of diligent work alongside city and state officials and the generosity of many funders, the brand-new, two-story Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse opened in September 2023. With dedicated space to provide WBGC programming focused on academic support, workforce readiness, and health & wellness, the latest addition to the organization is now serving the youth in the North End and Hollow neighborhoods of Bridgeport.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club now annually serves over 4000 youth ages 5-18 from Fairfield, Bridgeport, and surrounding towns and looks forward to reaching even more youth to fullfill our mission:

Webster Bank & Wakeman BGC Celebrate Opening of Finance Lab

$100,000 grant supports finance lab tools and resources at the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse

Webster Bank, together with Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, recently celebrated the opening of the Webster/Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Finance Lab, a program created to provide students the skills needed for financial empowerment and future financial well-being. The program is funded by a $100,000 grant from Webster and the Wakeman site is Webster’s first Finance Lab in Connecticut.

The Webster/Wakeman Finance Lab is part of a signature initiative designed to help Webster’s partners in low- to moderate-income (LMI) communities expand financial empowerment and improve financial literacy for youth. The grant funds will pay for programming with a dedicated instructor at Wakeman BGC’s newest Club. Located on Bridgeport’s Madison Avenue, the clubhouse is close to nine area schools, including Central High School, and will have the capacity to serve 2,000 youth ages 3 to 18.

Webster announced three additional Finance Lab locations earlier this year – two in Connecticut and one in southeastern Massachusetts – and expects to expand the initiative further in 2024.

“Webster is committed to investing in programs that broaden financial empowerment opportunities and help build our future workforce,” said Marissa Weidner, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer at Webster Bank. “We are thrilled to partner with Wakeman to provide Bridgeport youth the tools and resources to learn more about finance and prepare for a healthy financial future.”

Local and state dignitaries joined Webster leaders to officially open the program space housed on the first floor of the Club, which celebrated its Grand Opening in September. There is dedicated space for the Finance Lab that hundreds of students will have the opportunity to participate in financial literacy during after school and summer hours. The members will engage in hands-on learning opportunities including job shadowing, internships, and sessions with mentors from Webster Bank.

“The Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse opened on October 2, 2023 and having Webster’s financial empowerment programs for children, teens and families allows Wakeman to support the Bridgeport community in the most meaningful way” said Carlos Collazo, Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse Unit Executive Director. Connecticut is one of 23 states that have mandated the completion of personal finance curriculum to graduate from high school. Of these states, six introduced these requirements in 2023. According to Webster’s recently Financial Empowerment Study, an in-depth, independent report that examined financial challenges and literacy of consumers, just 27% of U.S. consumers report receiving any type of financial education in middle or high school. Those who received financial education in their middle and high school years are more likely to feel fully in control of their finances (49%) compared to those who did not receive any financial literacy courses (25%). The impact of these courses is clear and validates Webster’s commitment to support financial education by engaging in community partnerships.

Wakeman BGC Announces New Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club named John F. Kelly as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at a recent meeting. Kelly, who has been a member of the organization’s Board of Trustees since 2018, said, “I am honored to be named Chairman of the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Board of Trustees. Wakeman, an organization I strongly believe in, provides amazing opportunities to children in Bridgeport and Fairfield. I look forward to working with Sabrina [Wakeman BGC CEO], her team, and the Board to build on the great successes of the past, and to develop new programs that enable young people to become future leaders.”

John retired in 2022 as Vice President, Quality Operations and Environment, Health & Safety, responsible for leading the overall Quality function for Pfizer Inc and global EHS across the Company. During his 40-year career with Pfizer, John held executive leadership positions with responsibility for manufacturing strategy, business development, operations, quality and EHS.

John was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zydus Hospira Oncology Private Limited, a joint venture between Pfizer and Zydus Cadila. He was also a member of the Pfizer Global Supply Leadership Team and a member of the Pfizer PAC Board of Directors. In addition to his involvement at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, he is a member of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board. Previously he was a member of the Board of Directors of The Patterson Club, Fairfield, CT, and co-President of the Fairfield College Preparatory School Fathers’ Club.

John holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an M.B.A. in Operations Management from Pace University. He and his wife, Beth, have three sons and one daughter-in-law: Christopher (Ally), Thomas and Andrew.

John succeeds the outgoing Board Chair, Sean Sullivan, who served in the leadership position for five years. “Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is thrilled to have John appointed as our new Board Chair during this exciting time of growth and opportunity for our organization! We are also extremely grateful to Sean for his dedication and service to the Club. He helped lead the organization through the difficult years of the pandemic and saw the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse project through to its completion when we opened our doors to youth last month. We are thankful he will remain on the Board to continue to share his expertise,” said Wakeman BGC CEO, Sabrina E. Smeltz.

Donation of Food and Essentials Benefit Club & Community

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club teamed up with Price Rite Marketplace and Feed the Children to distribute food and essentials to 400 local families on Thursday, November 2. The event is part of Price Rite Marketplace’s 2023 Feeding Minds & Bodies campaign in partnership with Feed the Children, which helps support food-insecure families in communities where Price Rite Marketplace stores operate.

Recipients were pre-identified by Wakeman BGC in October via a first-come, first-served voucher distribution. On November 2, voucher holders returned to the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse where they received boxes of food, personal care items, children’s books, backpacks filled with school supplies, bottled water, Price Rite Marketplace gift cards and other essential items provided by Feed the Children and Price Rite Marketplace. Over 50 team members from Price Rite’s two Bridgeport Stores (Main St and Boston Ave.) and stores in Danbury and the Hartford area (Wethersfield, New Britain, West Hartford, Windsor) helped distribute food on event day. Wakeman BGC staff were on hand to facilitate event logistics.

“Price Rite Marketplace is committed to helping food-insecure families in the communities it serves,” said Kevin McDonnell, president of Price Rite Marketplace. “Our Feeding Minds & Bodies campaign is one of the many ways we serve our neighbors, and we are grateful to work with Feed the Children and the Boys & Girls Club to provide critical resources to children and families in need in nine cities.”

“Hunger not only affects children’s health, but also their performance in school,” said Travis Arnold, president and CEO of Feed the Children. “To properly address childhood hunger and all the issues it causes, people need to work together, and that is what we aim to do with the Feeding Minds & Bodies campaign. Partners like Price Rite and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club are vital to our mission as we serve vulnerable communities.”

Before the two-hour event, volunteers and staff heard from organization representatives and local dignitaries who thanked everyone for coming together to make an impact. Connecticut Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, Superintendent of Bridgeport Schools Dr. Carmela Levy-David, Mayor Joseph Ganim, and others spoke about the importance of such partnerships in filling critical needs for so many in vulnerable communities.

CEO Sabrina Smeltz Receives Award from BGCA

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is proud to announce that Chief Executive Officer, Sabrina Smeltz, was awarded the prestigious Blue Spirit Award from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

The Blue Spirit Award is the highest honor bestowed by the President & CEO of BGCA and recognizes a local Club leader whose impact on the community has made a major difference for youth and families. BGCA President & CEO, Jim Clark, surprised Smeltz with the award at the Northeast Regional Conference, held in Boston on October 10-13.

Clark spoke to Smeltz’s career-long commitment to serving youth, her focus on safety throughout the organization, and her work that resulted in the recent opening of WBGC’s new Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse, which serves youth in the North End and Hollow neighborhoods of Bridgeport.

Upon receiving the award, Smeltz addressed the other Club professionals in attendance. She reflected, “It takes a village…this award is not just about one person. We all get to be a voice in a different way. Keep doing what you’re doing; don’t give up—we all face challenges and barriers to our projects, but they result in amazing things for our youth and the community.”

Each fall, Boys & Girls Clubs of America hosts Regional Conferences, where thousands of attendees gather to learn about best practices and techniques in the field of youth development. Local Club professionals spend several days sharing and learning from each other in the areas of program delivery, resource development, administration, and more. At this year’s conference, Smeltz attended with two other Wakeman Boys & Girls Club staff and John Torres, the Executive Director of Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders (BCYL), another youth development organization that shares the space at Wakeman BGC’s new Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse. BCYL and WBGC have partnered and will collaborate on programming and activities to serve more of Bridgeport’s youth..

The Newest Addition to the Wakeman BGC Family Opens its Doors after 8 Years in the Making

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club hosted the long-awaited Grand Opening Ceremony & Ribbon Cutting on Thursday, September 21, 2023! It was a momentous occasion, with hundreds in attendance, all to celebrate the state-of-the-art facility and new opportunities for GREAT FUTURES in Bridgeport.

We continue to be overwhelmed with gratitude for our many community supporters, government officials, volunteers, Board of Trustees, and families. After gathering in the newly named David W. Blagys Gymnasium, in the newly presented Andrew J. Knuth Youth Center, in the brand-new Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse, we heard from our very own Unit Executive Director Carlos Collazo, CEO Sabrina Smeltz, and Board Chair Sean Sullivan. We also heard from Mayor Joseph Ganim, State Representative Steve Stafstrom, Majority Leader City Council Jeanette Herron, Chad McCullough from Turner Construction, and Joseph Linhart, Program Manager for the US Department of Housing & Urban Development. It was inspiring to hear about how meaningful this new Clubhouse is to so many people.

Jim Clark, President & CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, joined us from Atlanta and spoke about the importance of safe spaces for children, as well as the forward momentum of the Boys & Girls Club movement.

Michael Jai White, Bridgeport native, Central High School Alum, actor, director, martial artist, and North End Boys & Girls Club Alumnus also joined the celebration! It was great to hear about the significant role that the Boys & Girls Club’s programs played in his life.

After the program, children and families filled the halls! There were activities in each room including building sailboats with Home Depot, facepainting, arts & crafts, popcorn, cotton candy, games, free haircuts, backpack giveaways…and so much more!

After School Program started on Monday, October 2, and the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse is now open and building GREAT FUTURES!

Hand in Hand 2023 Celebrates Club and Community

The Second Annual Hand in Hand Celebration honored accomplishments in academics, sports, and leadership.

Over 300 friends of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club gathered on Monday, May 8, to recognize members of the Club and community for their achievements during the 2022-23 school year. Board members, sponsors, donors, and local government leaders were also present to witness the tremendous impact their support has on our kids and teens.

The evening culminated with our Youth of the Year from both the Smilow-Burroughs and Southport Clubhouses accepting their awards and speaking about their experiences at Wakeman BGC over the years.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Welcomes New Additions to Leadership Team

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club has recently welcomed three members to the full-time staff, filling roles that are vital to the growing organization. Lisa Byrne has taken the role of Chief Financial Officer; Sarah Motti has assumed the position of Director of Development; and Shawn D. Byrd has been named the Unit Executive Director of the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse.

As CFO, Lisa will manage all financial functions of the organization, which is set to open its third clubhouse later this summer. She previously held senior leadership roles at The Connecticut Audubon Society, Foundation Source Philanthropic Services, and GE Capital. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bucknell University.

Director of Development, Sarah Motti, comes to Wakeman BGC after working with other youth-serving organizations since 2010. Starting out on the program side, Sarah quickly found her cause in fundraising at the Cardinal Shehan Center and the McGivney Community Center, both in Bridgeport. Sarah holds a BA from Smith College and is a member of the Board of Directors of Leadership Greater Bridgeport. She is also a Board Member with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Fairfield County Chapter, serving as President in 2021.

Prior to joining the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club team as Unit Executive Director of the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, Shawn D. Byrd enjoyed a successful career in the technology sector. He held executive management, sales, and marketing roles with fortune 500 companies, Coca-Cola, Xerox, and Computer Associates. He then pivoted to focus on social entrepreneurship, founding the STEAMulating Young Minds Imagination (SYMI) Academy in his hometown of Bridgeport, CT, where he has been a life-long resident. Appointed by the city’s Mayor and Chief of Police, Shawn also serves as the Bridgeport Community & Police Youth Collaborative (BCPYC) Liaison. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems from The Virginia State University. He is a proud Life Member of The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated and serves on the Board of Directors for the fraternity’s Northeastern Province.

In addition to the three new team members, Laura Magnotta has transitioned from her role as Unit Director at the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse to the organization’s Director of Safety & Leadership Development. Megan Mazzeo to Vie for State Title and Scholarship

Selected from 7 outstanding youth across the organization, Megan has been named Wakeman Boys & Girls Club's 2023 Youth of the Year. The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs of America's signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders, fully prepared to live and lead in a diverse, global and integrated world economy. .Megan will go on to contend for the Connecticut Youth of the Year title and a $2,500 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Megan is a senior at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, where she has been recognized for her exemplary academic record as well as her athletic and artistic contributions to the community. As a volunteer mentor for peers with special needs, she has developed the ability and desire to advocate for those whose voices are not always heard. A natural leader, Megan was named captain for both the FLHS Field Hockey and Lacrosse teams during the 2022-23 season. As Youth of the Year, Megan will use these advocacy and leadership skills to represent the youth of America. “As Keystone Club president, I am consistently practicing the skills of collaboration and teamwork to create a Club atmosphere that fosters growth and development. Working with others is essential to represent the youth of America as it will allow for the combination of different perspectives.”

At Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, Megan has been an active member of the Torch and Keystone Clubs, chairing the Keystone Outreach and Torch Connection Committees and currently serving as Co-President of Keystone Club. In the summer of 2022, she traveled to California to attend the Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Keystone Conference as a delegate. While there, she participated in forums and connected with Club members from around the country to gain new insights, and even competed in the national talent show. One of her favorite things about the Club is the inclusive community it provides that fosters individuality and personal growth.

As the Program Director who leads the Torch and Keystone Clubs, Coreen Ahmad has witnessed Megan’s contributions and growth at Wakeman BGC. “It’s magical to watch Megan at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. As role model and officer in Keystone Club, Megan helps show the value of experienced and engaged mentors and leader Megan is an invaluable asset to our clubhouse and the younger teens and even peers use her as a guide, support, and creative idea generator.”

For fun, Megan loves visiting National Parks with her family where they hike as much as possible. She has a passion for photography--which serves as a creative outlet--and has earned her many awards for her art submissions. She will attend Hamilton College in the fall, where she will study biology and play field hockey.

If Megan is named the Connecticut Youth of the Year, she will contend for the title of Northeast Regional Youth of the Year who will receive an additional $20,000 college scholarship. Six regional finalists will advance to the National Youth of the Year event in October 2023, to vie for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive an additional scholarship of $50,000.

New Paradigm Theatre will highlight Wakeman BGC's Mission during summer production of Grease

Each summer, The New Paradigm Theatre (NPT) Company partners with another non-profit that reflects the theme of the summer production to raise awareness for issues and organizations in the surrounding community. For Grease, NPT is proud to partner with Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.

NPT is well-known for its inventive productions that are presented with multi-cultural, multi-generational and multi-gendered casting. Sabrina Smeltz, Wakeman BGC's CEO, says, "Though set in the 1950's, the teens in Grease struggle with peer pressure, identifying core values, and the question 'what should I do with my life?'-much the same as teens today. Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is happy to partner with New Paradigm Theatre in this production because it shines a light on the importance of providing teens with a welcoming space and mentors to help them develop character, become leaders, and explore their own unique potential.” As partnerships between nonprofits continue to form in order to tackle social challenges from all sides, and as youth lead the way to a better world, this type of collective impact production has become increasingly relevant and a vital component of a community.

New Paradigm Theatre will be hiring professionals in some leading roles and then will cast local youth that apply for the three-week rehearsal and workshop experience so they can learn elbow to elbow with the professionals. Mrs. Lynch will be played by Broadway, Radio and Voice over star, Randye Kaye. Young people ages 8-18 may apply to be a part of the cast. The show will include live and movie scenes directed by Broadway veteran and artistic director, Kristin Huffman. “The movie scenes” in our show will star our teens and be produced by Mark Holleran (Holleran Media Productions) and Emmy nominee, Scott Bryce. We love mixing media so that our youth learn about theatre and film in the same show. And this famous movie musical was perfect for this style” says Huffman.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Wakeman BGC CEO Sabrina Smeltz welcomed 75 guests to the site of the organization's third clubhouse at 595 Madison Avenue, Bridgeport, to celebrate the progress made towards the goal of a summer 2023 opening.

In addition to Smeltz, Carlos Collazo, the recently appointed Unit Executive Director , and Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim both spoke to those in attendance, applauding the amazing resource being created for kids and teens in the Hollow/North End neighborhoods of the City. Guests were also invited to walk the inside of the structure and to sign the ceremonial beam, which will be permanently on display in the clubhouse's lobby.

Carlos Collazo Comes "Home" to Join the Wakeman BGC Team

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club welcomes Carlos Collazo as the first Unit Executive Director of our new Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse, scheduled to open summer 2023 at 595 Madison Avenue, in Bridgeport’s North End/Hollow neighborhood.

Collazo comes to Wakeman BGC with over 20 years in the Boys & Girls Club movement and most recently served as the Executive Director of the Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club in North Haven. While there, Collazo led the organization through a period of growth and an expansion into multiple sites, saw membership and employment opportunities multiply, and oversaw a merger with the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven.

“Carlos brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of building relationships with community partners. Plus, as a Bridgeport native, he has ties to the community this new Clubhouse will serve. I am confident that we have found the right person to help us successfully open our doors to the hundreds of local youth who are waiting to benefit from our programs,” states Wakeman BGC CEO, Sabrina Smeltz.

Most fittingly, Carlos is an alum of the former North End Boys & Girls Club, which previously occupied the site of the new Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse. “I have been an advocate of the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of America for so long, starting as a member at the North End Club and then in 1995 when I worked at the Bridgeport Boys & Girls Club. I feel like I have truly come full circle and found a home with Wakeman Boys & Girls Club,” Collazo reflects.

Collazo will celebrate this homecoming at a Beam Raising Ceremony on Wednesday, November 16, 1pm at the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse site. There, he will welcome many of the trustees, community partners, and donors who have made this important project possible. The event will feature an update on the project and the ceremonial raising of a steel beam–decorated with members’ handprints and signed by major donors–that will be permanently displayed in the lobby of the clubhouse.

Collazo has completed Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Advanced Leadership Program, Executive Leadership Program, and Principles of Leadership through Employers Association of the Northeast. He earned a Certificate of Completion and Fellowship through the University of New Haven for participating in the Transforming Youth Justice Leadership Development Program. He earned his Associates in Human Services at Housatonic Community College and Illustration at Paier College of Art.

On Monday, August 8, campers from the Smilow-Burroughs and Southport Clubhouses enjoyed a special clinic led by the UCONN Men Basketball Team. The Huskies spent the morning helping kids in grades K-5 hone their basketball skills as they rotated through ball handling, rebounding, dribbling and other stations.

First Annual Hand in Hand Event Celebrates Wakeman BGC Community

The Wakeman BGC Family came together to celebrate the Youth of the Year and other Club and community members.

The first annual Hand in Hand Community Celebration was held on May 9 at the Southport Clubhouse. Over 300 kids, teens, family members, Wakeman BGC Board Members, donors, volunteers, and friends of the Club gathered to honor our Club kids and community members for their achievements in the 2021-22 school year.

Members, volunteers, and staff were recognized for their contributions in the areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Character & Leadership. The program culminated with awards given to the 2022 Youth of the Year, the Boys & Girls Club's most prestigious award that honors exemplary young people who exemplify leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Partnering with Mystic Aquarium to Empower the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders

Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse Receives Funding to Implement Program

Mystic Aquarium announces the expansion of its national youth conservation initiative in partnership with community-based organizations in 28 states, Puerto Rico, and on several Native American reservations. The initiative will engage thousands of underserved youth in communities that have been disproportionally impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and have traditionally borne the brunt of environmental issues such as pollution and climate change. Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is among the youth development organizations receiving funds to administer this impactful program in the local community.

“Mystic Aquarium is a national leader in working with underserved youth and engaging them in conservation projects while empowering them to take action to protect and restore their local environment. We are celebrating our tenth year of implementing this program model, and it is core to how we think about the role of Mystic Aquarium, not only as a place people visit, but as a resource for addressing challenging environmental issues, including the inequity and injustice of how these issues, such as air and water quality, impact low-income communities and communities of color,” said Katie Cubina, Senior Vice President for Mission Programs.

This summer, Mystic Aquarium will bring together teen mentors from all over the country in a series of intensive summer workshops that will build their environmental leadership and advocacy skills, connect them with the Aquarium’s research and conservation efforts, and engage them in environmental stewardship projects such as planting marsh grass, removing invasive species, testing water quality, and monitoring populations of threatened animals.

Mystic Aquarium staff will work directly with these teens to develop a customized environmental stewardship project for their community. This will include asset mapping, identifying a local environmental issue and a physical site such as a park with a stream where they can address the issue, identifying important community partners to connect with, and mapping their location. Each group will leave with an implementation plan to bring back to their community organization and implement with staff, youth, and families. These projects will be shared and showcased across the national network through a customized mapping tool, and Mystic Aquarium staff will continue to support and track this growing movement of environmental leaders.

“Empowering and lifting up youth is key to this project. Many of us underestimate young people. But I’ve seen what they are capable of. They are often our most passionate, knowledgeable, and effective advocates for the environment. It’s a privilege to work with our dedicated community-based partners and the youth that they serve,” said Cubina.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Program Director, James Murphy, agrees that this collaboration is a win-win: “This initiative bridges the gap between STEM and Character & Leadership, which is a priority outcome area at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Our youth are future technicians and politicians; we want them to build skills and have access to knowledge to combat climate challenges. As a coastal city, we see firsthand how marine environments have been affected. Hopefully our youth can offer solutions locally.” Murphy works directly with the teens at Wakeman BGC’s Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, which is in Bridgeport.

The expansion of this national youth conservation initiative is the logical next step for Mystic Aquarium, which is a leader in the conservation of marine ecosystems and wildlife and the establishment of marine protected areas. Increasing equitable access to public land and water while advancing community-based, locally-led conservation and restoration efforts contributes to the global goal of protecting at least 30% of all land and water by 2030. That is a goal that we must hit to effectively stave off the current global biodiversity and climate crises.

With the assistance of a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Mystic Aquarium will invest more than $1.5 million in the participating communities to support their work at the local level in the form of subawards that average $30,000 per site. The subawards will cover local staff time, travel expenses, and all training, curriculum, and supplies needed to successfully implement the program.

Madison Avenue Clubhouse in Bridgeport is Becoming a Reality

The groundbreaking for Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s new Madison Avenue Clubhouse is set for Monday, March 28, 2022, 11 a.m. at 595 Madison Avenue in Bridgeport. The Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Madison Avenue Clubhouse in the North End/Hollow neighborhoods of Bridgeport will open for children and families Summer 2023.

In 2016, the City of Bridgeport approached Wakeman Boys & Girls Club to establish a partnership to replace the condemned North End Boys & Girls Club facility on Madison Avenue. The City of Bridgeport was eager for Wakeman Boys & Girls Club to replicate the success of the organization's Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse that opened in the West End area of Bridgeport in 2011.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club— with the support of their Board of Trustees and greater community—has raised over $15 million in private contributions, in addition to the recent news of a State of Connecticut $3 million bond and additional City of Bridgeport, State and New Markets Tax Credit funding.

“The outpouring of support is humbling. This project would not be a reality without the generosity of our longstanding Wakeman Boys & Girls Club supporters. The $3 million bond from the State, after the early funding and land provided by the City of Bridgeport, is one more vote of confidence from the community in Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s ability to provide more services to Bridgeport youth. This important project helps us fulfill our mission, which is “to guide and inspire young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential,” says Wakeman Boys & Girls Club CEO, Sabrina E. Smeltz.

According to Smeltz, State Representative Steve Stafstrom, Speaker of the House Matt Ritter, Governor Ned Lamont, City Council Members, Senator Marilyn Moore, and members of the Bridgeport delegation played a critical role in advancing the project.

"The construction of a state-of-the-art Wakeman Boys & Girls Club on Madison Avenue has long been a priority of mine and I am thrilled to have been able to secure the critical State matching investment needed to finally make this $23 million project a reality," State Representative Steve Stafstrom said. "I want to extend my thanks to Governor Lamont, Speaker Ritter and commission members for understanding this project's significance and value."

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s Madison Avenue Clubhouse project will be a two-story 44,230 square foot space and will bring significant resources and opportunities to one of the most socio-economically challenged areas in the state.

In proximity to the new clubhouse are nine schools and the organization anticipates serving over 2,000 new youth ages 3 to 18 annually. Club kids will benefit from academic support, health, wellness, recreation, nutrition, social and emotional learning, and enrichment programs in a safe space. The facility will include multiple learning centers, a three-court field house, performing arts space, a technology room, teen lounge, STEM learning space, and a licensed preschool center. In addition to being a rich resource for children and families, the clubhouse will contribute to the economic development of the North End and Hollow neighborhoods by adding 40 new full-time equivalent positions, and part-time roles for first-time, job-seeking teens.

Wakeman BGC is also partnering with Southwest Community Health Center, which will have a 10,000 square foot clinic on the second floor of the building and will provide medical, dental, vision and behavioral health services. Other partners, including Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders, will collaborate with Wakeman Boys & Girls Club on programming and activities.

The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. Now in its 75th year, the Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures. Rania will go on to contend for the Connecticut Youth of the Year title and a $2,500 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Ahmad, a senior at Trumbull High School, has an exemplary academic record and has been recognized by her school and other organizations for her leadership, service, and volunteerism. Her passion for equality and advocacy is reflected in the causes and projects she takes on in her many roles. When asked about how she can effect change as Youth of the Year, Rania says, “I will use my voice to educate others unaware of the issues that some youth face by continuing to attend protests, speak to community and government officials, and help youth advocate for themselves.”

At Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, Ahmad is the current Co-President of the Southport Clubhouse’s Keystone Club, a teen group dedicated to leadership and community service. For several years, she has been a mentor in the Great Futures Mentoring Program, where she discovered how each encounter with a child could have meaningful, lasting impact. “Recognizing how far my own education has taken me makes me so passionate to ensure that others are educated as well," she reflects. Ahmad is also a Wakeman BGC junior staff member, working several days each week. Her favorite Club memory is going Over The Edge--rappelling down a highrise--to raise money for the Club.

Outside of Wakeman BGC, Rania plays varsity field hockey and is busy as the president of Student Council. She enjoys playing with her dog, running, and travelling. After graduation, she will study chemical engineering at the University of Southern California.

Peer Mentors and Engagement with Law Enforcement: Wakeman Boys & Girls Club

While Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s (BGCA) Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) National Mentoring Program is offered Movement-wide, it is often necessary for local Clubs to adapt the focus of their programming to best suit the needs of the youth they serve. Over its 17-year history implementing the OJJDP mentoring program, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club has consistently employed this adaptability to maintain quality mentoring services for its members. Through their use of teen and adult mentors and approach to police engagement, the Club has implemented its program in a way that is beneficial not only to participating youth but also the surrounding community.

One of the defining aspects of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s OJJDP mentoring program is its use of teen mentors. Located at the Club’s site at McKinley Elementary School in Fairfield, Connecticut, the program draws mentors from area high schools, who work with mentees in a one-to-one mentoring program model. The Club conducts a full interview with each potential teen mentor before the start of their mentoring term. Unit Director, Tim Cepetelli, reflects on this process: “During the interview, we get to know teens and try to initiate matches based on common interests. This matching process has helped our program run smoothly.”

Once teen mentors have been properly interviewed and trained, they are ready for program involvement. A major benefit of recruiting teens is younger mentors often find it easier to relate to mentees. The smaller age difference allows teen mentors to have a closer connection to school/life issues mentees may have, which in turn helps improve program involvement. “The mentees want to be in the program, they want to have a teen mentor. It makes others receptive to it,” says Cepetelli.

As added support for its teen mentors, the Club also recruits adult mentors to act as chaperones. A group of 10 adult mentors guide less experienced teen mentors, with three coming in each week to help with the program. With their Club knowledge – many are parents of children who were Club members – and personal and professional expertise, adult mentors form a strong support system. Program Director Coreen Ahmad explains, “Chaperones are knowledgeable; they walk around to engage with teens and mentees. When something comes up that the teen needs back-up on, they can work with the adult.”

Adds Cepetelli, “They are not just getting to know the mentees; they are also getting to know the teens.” Through this added support, the adult mentor plays an important role in the sustainability of the Club’s OJJDP Mentoring Program.

A unique element of the Club’s OJJDP mentoring program is the manner in which it partners with the local police. Police officers from the Fairfield Police Department are a regular and friendly presence at the Club, engaging with youth and playing games such as football and basketball. The police K-9 unit is particularly appealing to youth, with police dogs brought in on a regular basis. Says Ahmad, “The kids can pet the dogs and engage with the officers. A penny carnival was even held to raise money to donate to the K-9 unit.” This engagement has helped change youth perspectives. Ahmad reflects, “Some kids were initially fearful of local law enforcement. Seeing a police officer as a regular person —someone you might see at the grocery store—makes them feel at ease. Now there is more engagement, with kids seeing police on a more regular basis. They have conversations about law enforcement as a career choice and have generally opened up the lines of communication.”

Cepetelli adds, “There is a wide variety of officers who look like our kids, including female and minority officers. Seeing police officers who look like them is very impactful for the kids. They ask questions and are drawn to talk to them.” This aspect of the Club’s OJJDP mentoring program has created positive connections with the local police department, improving perceptions for mentees and teen mentors.

Through the use of teen mentors under adult supervisions, and a strong commitment to police engagement, the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club has created a space that positively impacts youth and mentors. Cepetelli also reflects on the impact it has had on a larger scale: “The program’s presence has helped kids engage more with this community. This also has allowed us to form stronger relationships with families.” Over its 17-year presence in the community, the Club’s OJJDP mentoring program has proved to be an invaluable resource to area youth and an asset to the wider community.

Sabrina Smeltz Named WBGC New CEO

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club announced that Sabrina Smeltz will assume the role of CEO in May. Sabrina was hired as Wakeman’s Chief Operating Officer in 2018 as part of a broader CEO succession plan. Since then, she has focused on the day to day operations of the organization, which includes the original Clubhouse in Southport, the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse in Bridgeport, and Outreach programs at McKinley and Holland Hill schools in Fairfield. In addition, Sabrina has been influential in Wakeman’s plans to open a third clubhouse on Madison Avenue in Bridgeport.

David Blagys, Wakeman BGC Executive Director, will assist Sabrina through the transition and will continue with the organization, focusing on the important work of resource development and the Madison Avenue project. Dave joined Wakeman in 1981 and has served as the Executive Director since 1984. Under his leadership, Wakeman has grown from a single Southport location serving 650 boys, to an organization with four sites serving over 3,300 youth from diverse communities and socioeconomic backgrounds. He has guided the organization through three successful capital campaigns that resulted in the expansion and then renovation of the Southport Clubhouse, and the opening of the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse.

Board of Trustees Chairman, Sean S. Sullivan affirmed, “As we continue to strengthen and streamline our growing organization, we are pleased to announce that we are promoting Sabrina to the role of CEO, effective May 1. We are confident that under her leadership, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club will continue to thrive and provide the critical support needed to the youth in the communities we serve. At the same time, we recognize and celebrate Dave Blagys, who has been a friend and a mentor to so many. His unwavering passion and dedication to the youth we serve is what we aspire to achieve as an organization.”

Sabrina wholeheartedly agrees: “I am thrilled to take on this new role at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. Since coming on board in 2018, it has become clear that the strength of this organization comes from solid roots grounded in tradition and dedication to our mission. Much of that must be credited to Dave [Blagys], whose leadership has established Wakeman as a strong partner in the community. He is leaving big shoes to fill, but I am so grateful for his guidance and I look forward to working with him to continue serving our growing community, through these current challenges and beyond.”

2020 Great Futures Benefit Auction Sneaks in Before Pandemic Hits

Our 2020 Great Futures Benefit Auction was successfully held on March 7 at out Southport Clubhouse. Guests "Let the Good Times Roll" and enjoyed an amazing menu of New Orleans style fare from Chef Matt Storch , music by The Alpaca Gnomes , and exciting auction items .
