Wakeman Teams Up with Read Aloud Day in Bridgeport Schools
Wakeman staff, board members, and friends joined in the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport's 32nd Annual Read Aloud Day on October 19, 2017. Fifteen members of the Wakeman crew visited Cesar Batalla School and Geraldine Claytor Magnet Academy and loved reading to classes and meeting the enthusiastic students and teachers. Six hundred and fifty volunteers who live and work in the greater Bridgeport community gathered schools across the district to share their love of reading with every pre-kindergarten through sixth grade class in the Bridgeport Public Schools.
“It was an amazing feeling to walk into a kindergarten classroom where kids were excited for reading - they even gave me a group hug and high fives when I finished!” said Smilow-Burroughs Unit Director Laura Magnotta. “We believe it’s important to not only share our love of reading to kids in the city, but also to let them know the Boys & Girls Club can be a special part of their lives for education, friendships and healthy living.”
Cesar Batalla School and Claytor Academy are both nearby the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, making the Club a popular hangout for students after school. Wakeman also manages the Lighthouse After School Program at Claytor Academy and the “Wakeman Walkers Program” – a walking “bus” of staff and kids who walk the three blocks from school to Club every afternoon.
Read Aloud Day books are specially selected for each grade level by SVA and generously provided by community supporters. This year’s diverse stories included The Cow Who Climbed a Tree, Mr. Ferris and His Wheel, and Trombone Shorty. All books read were presented as a donation to the school library by guest readers.
The purpose of SVA’s annual Read Aloud Day is for the enthusiasm shown by volunteers for reading and learning to inspire children to continue reading on their own and develop the skills that will make them successful in school and life.
