The Southport Clubhouse offers various art and education programs throughout the year. Art programs enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts, and creative writing. Education programs help members create aspirations for the future, providing opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement. Creative Kids                                                                                                                        
Boys & Girls Grades 1-2

Young members in this class will explore different mediums each week as they create weekly masterpieces in our Studio Gallery. Each participant will be given a personal set of art tools to use throughout the program that will be theirs to keep! Classes will be held on Mondays, September 26th–November 7th (no class October 3rd) from 4:15pm-5:30pm.

Registration begins August 24th.
CPR/Babysitting                                                                                                              
Boys & Girls Grades 6-8

The "super sitters” class will allow all participants to become fully certified in infant, child, and adult CPR. The class will be taught by a registered nurse and will meet on Wednesdays, September 14th-October 26th (no class on October 12th) from 4:15pm-6:00pm. In order to become certified, it is mandatory that members attend all 6 classes.

It is very important for members to pay serious attention during every class. This is an excellent class for our young babysitters.

Registration beings August 15th.
Open Resume Night                                                                                                  
Boys & Girls Grades 10-12

Starting the college application process? Feeling a little lost? Come down to Wakeman and get some tips on how to set up your resume, brush up your interview skills and get a head start on the college process. This is a free program, offered to members and non-members. 

Youth will be able to sit with a professional for 20 minutes between 5:30pm and 8:30pm on Wednesday, September 14th and gain assistance building resumes, developing college essays or gaining interview experience. This is a one night event and spots are limited so sign up fast! Please call the Club to register.

Art Masters

Lego Robotics                                                                                                                    
Boys & Girls Grades 3-5

This NEW program will introduce younger members to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. Over the course of 6 classes, you (YES YOU!) will have built your own robot with a small group of friends and programmed it to dance around the room. Classes will meet from 4:15pm–5:30pm on Tuesday, October 4th–November 15th.

Registration begins September 8th.
Smart Kids Make Smart Moves I & II                                                                
Boys & Girls Grades 1-2

This program is sponsored by Boys & Girls Clubs of America and its goal is to provide children with the knowledge, skills and self-esteem to help kids avoid risky behaviors and/or situations. Members will learn how to deal with peer pressure, participate in self-awareness activities to develop respect for one’s own body, ability to handle feelings and healthy habits. It is a fun learning experience that provides youth with age appropriate knowledge and skills they would need to grow to be confident teenagers. The class will also have time set aside for the members to participate in a supervised gym activity and snack time. 

Classes will be held from 4:00pm–5:15pm. Session I will be held on Wednesdays, October 26th–December 7th (no class November 23rd). Session II will be held on Thursdays, January 12th-February 16th.

Registration begins September 20th.
3D Art                                                                                                                            
Boys & Girls Grades 1-2 & 3-5

Come join this innovative art program where all of your projects will literally pop off of the page. During each week
of class members will use a different medium to sculpt in order to create a 3-dimensional project. Members will be able to gain experience sculpting, molding, carving and fashioning a variety of materials. Classes will be held from 4:15pm–5:15pm.

Session I (1st & 2nd Grade): Mondays-November 21st-December 19th

Session II (3rd-5th Grade): Thursdays-January 5th-Febuary 9th 
Registration: December 6th 
The Impossible Cooking Series                                                                              
Boys & Girls Grades 6-8

During this new cooking series, young chefs will be participating in weekly cooking challenges that will introduce them to new foods in a fun way while working with their peers as the clock counts down. This new program will help members practice basic math, reading and time telling skills while also gaining an understanding of sequencing. For 3 classes, chefs will select a bag of mystery themed ingredients and cooking assignments that they will have to complete with the help of their peers. Classes will meet on Thursdays, December 1st–December 15th from 4:00pm–5:30pm.

Registration begins October 18th.
Weird Science                                                                                                                    
Boys & Girls Grades 3-5

Members will explore different science experiments that will help them measure action, reaction, and results in this new class. Activities during this class will include making and racing balloon cars, testing our own volcanic eruptions with various edible products, creating our own glow sticks and much, much more. Members will learn to use their own backyard as a science lab in this new class. Classes will meet on Tuesdays, January 10th–February 14th from 4:15pm–5:15pm.

Registration begins November 29th.
Fine Arts Exhibit                                                                                                            
Boys & Girls Grades 3-12

Each year Wakeman showcases the artistic talents of our members in conjunction with Boys & Girls Club of America’s Fine Arts Exhibit. The exhibit is a program designed to promote creativity using various media and to encourage artistic skills and cultural enrichment. Last year 356 young artists entered 386 pieces of art. Wakeman had six pieces at the Regional level in Vermont move on to the National Fine Art Exhibit in Atlanta, GA. Log onto www.bgca.org to view the works of the 36 national winners.
 
This year Wakeman’s exhibit will run from January 23rd through February 24th with at Preview Party on January 23rd.
Any artwork created by a Wakeman member in 2015-2016 at home, in school or at the club may be entered into the exhibit. All entries must be received by January 23rd.
