Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Receives $15,000 Grant
for Outreach Program to McKinley School Students

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club announced today that it received a $15,000 grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation.  The grant is in support of Wakeman’s programs offered through outreach efforts to students from McKinley Elementary School.   Students at McKinley Elementary School benefit from Wakeman programs offered to them at school during after school hours as well as at Wakeman’s Stratfield Clubhouse.

Outreach programs to McKinley Elementary School students began in 2005 and have been very well received by children, parents and the staff and teachers at the school.   Wakeman outreach efforts to McKinley have been recognized through a “Moment of Pride” at a Fairfield Board of Education meeting as well as being recognized as an exemplary program by the Connecticut Educational Association.

"We are extremely grateful for this very generous gift, and for the ongoing support for this initiative that we have received from the Fairfield County Community Foundation,” said Club Executive, David Blagys. “Our Board of Directors, staff, and dozens of volunteers are dedicated to providing quality programs to the McKinley Elementary School students and to have the support of the foundation means a great deal to our organization.”

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club currently serves 4,000 members from throughout Fairfield, Bridgeport and neighboring towns.  The Southport Clubhouse offers more than 100 athletic, educational, and service programs offered annually.  The Stratfield Clubhouse provides programming to 400 1st – 8th graders from four local schools who receive transportation from school to the Clubhouse.  The Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse opened in June 2011 and serves more than 500 children in grades 3-12 with programs designed to support their academics and provide recreational, cultural and leadership opportunities that were unavailable to them prior to the opening of the new Clubhouse.

The Fairfield County Community Foundation promotes the growth of community and regional philanthropy to improve the quality of life throughout Fairfield County. Individuals, families, corporations and organizations can establish charitable funds or contribute to existing funds. The Foundation also provides philanthropic advisory services, and develops and leads initiatives to tackle critical community issues. It is in compliance with the Council on Foundations’ national standards for community foundations. The Foundation has awarded $123 million in grants to nonprofits in Fairfield County and beyond. Attention Volunteer Basketball and Lacrosse Coaches!
Wakeman instituted a mandatory coaching certification program for all new volunteer coaching candidates in the basketball and in house and travel lacrosse divisions.  The program will follow the guidelines of the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), a nationally recognized youth sport coaching curriculum.  It will include a 2 hour workshop covering a discussion of coaching responsibilities, planning techniques and legal obligations. If you have already taken the class, you are a certified coach at Wakeman. You do not have to take the course again, but can participate if you would like a refresher.
