Spring Lacrosse
Lacrosse Program Explanations
Wakeman offers various programs to allow members of all skill levels to participate competitively, as well as, continuing to learn important aspects of lacrosse in a fun and enjoyable learning environment. When considering which program best suits your child’s interest and abilities please make sure you understand the expectations and can fulfill the commitment.
Travel Teams
The Wakeman Travel Team requires the greatest commitment from players who plan to play in this program. Travel teams practice for an hour and a half two nights a week and will usually have one or two games throughout each week/weekend. This is a highly organized, competitive program participating in the CONNY (Connecticut/NY Youth Lacrosse Association) league, and differing from our In-House leagues.
Our goal is to promote player development and camaraderie while producing a team that works well together and improves as much as a unit as they do as individuals. Playing on other athletic teams during the spring season causes scheduling conflicts and also adds to the over burdening of the children. They normally do not perform up to their potential when participating in multiple games on a given day.
Tryouts will be held for those interested in playing at this level, but everyone who tries out will not make a travel team. If your child wants to tryout, please have him/her do so only if you as parents, and your child as a team member are willing to make the necessary commitment. The commitment required is very extensive from March through June. Those players who tryout for one of our travel teams, but do not make a travel team will have a spot in the In-House program. No refunds will be given after tryouts.
In-House
In-House teams practice once a week for an hour and fifteen minutes and will play one game each weekend. Each player on an In-House team can expect to play in every game and within each team playing time will be equalized as much as possible, based on attendance at practice and games. Players can also expect the opportunity to play every position on the field at some point over the course of the season in a game. Based on the registration numbers each house team may play one away game and other town teams at home throughout the season.
The In-House teams are balanced to the best of our abilities through a player evaluation process. This year evaluations will be performed during the weeks leading up to the first week of the season. The information collected on each player’s skill will be used to distribute the skill and experience evenly among the teams. When forming In-House teams a player’s school and conflicts as well as player evaluations are taken into consideration.
Evaluations
The players need to choose one out of the three sessions available for their age group. For information on times and dates of these sessions please look at the descriptions for each league. While participating in these sessions each player will be evaluated. The information collected on each player’s skill will be used to distribute talent evenly among the teams. When making In-House teams, a player’s school, conflict day and evaluation are all taken into consideration.
Referees
Wakeman will have clinics for anoyone interested in refereeing the In-House games for both the boys and girls games. Dates and times will be listed on the website for those interested in being referees. If you are interested in refereeing this year please email Drew at Drew@Wakemanclub.com for further information.
