On June 29, we celebrated the Grand Opening of our brand new Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse. A memorable moment in Wakeman history, the Clubhouse will provide a new population of children with the time-tested programs that current Wakeman members have participated in for years.
It was in 1955 that the Black Rock Businessman’s Association and Boys Clubs of America agreed that the Black Rock neighborhood was “in need of a Boys Club”. Despite this designation, it was not until Wakeman’s involvement nearly two generations later that the idea of building a Boys & Girls Club in the West End of Bridgeport became a reality.
For most of our members at the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, this is their first experience at a Boys and Girls Club, and they couldn’t be more excited. Programming at the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse kicked off with a summer camp program for 3rd – 8th graders. The camp program filled up quickly, and now 170 campers come to the Club each day to participate in a variety of fun activities including arts and crafts, sports, computer classes, dance, and theater.
In the fall, programs at the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse will be similar to the programs we currently offer at our Southport and Stratfield Clubhouses. The after-school program will follow Stratfield’s successful model. Basketball leagues will begin, a Keystone Club will be established, and members will have the opportunity to participate in dance, art, and computer classes.
