2012 Summer Camp Descriptions
DAY CAMP: GRADES 1-5
$130 HALF DAY / $220 FULL DAY
This summer Wakeman will be providing a week to remember for every child in 1st-5th grade. The children will be broken into groups of 10-12 children with a 6:1 camper/counselor ratio. Children will participate in their favorite sport games such as: dodge ball, capture the flag, kickball, baseball and soccer. They will also participate in arts and crafts, gameroom tournaments, as well as a special event each week. Last year’s events included Break Dancers, Curious Critters, a Slip-n-Slide and Moon Bounce. We will be offering half day or full day camps for each of these weeks. Half day will run from 9:00am-12:00pm, which will include all the normal activities and the weekly special event. The full day will run from 9:00am-3:30pm for those parents who wish to have their kids enjoy a full day of fun. Full day campers should bring lunch from 12:00pm-12:30pm.
BASEBALL/BASKETBALL: GRADES 3-5

This combination Baseball and Basketball Camp will focus on fundamental skill development in a fun environment led by Wakeman program director Rich Lee. Campers will learn to apply those skills in game situations for both sports. They will enjoy some fun contests and learn the proper mindset for young athletes to prepare themselves for playing multiple sports. This is a great opportunity for members to improve their skills at these two wonderful sports.
BASKETBALL CAMP: GRADES 5-8

Join Rich Lee, Wakeman Basketball Director, for an exciting week of basketball. Campers will expand their skill set and knowledge of the game through proven techniques and fundamental training. Games will be a part of camp as well as introduction to team concepts and individual development. This is the one you can’t miss!
GIRLS BASKETBALL CAMP: GRADES 3-5

This instructional basketball camp is a great way to develop skills and basketball knowledge in the offseason. Girls will be able to enhance their skills while developing a deeper knowledge of the game. The girls will be instructed at a 6:1 ratio and have the opportunity to work on ball handling, defense, shooting, rebounding, and court knowledge. In order for the camp to run we will need twenty girls by April 29th.
GIRLS LACROSSE/FIELD HOCKEY COMBO CAMP: GRADES 4-8

With lacrosse and field hockey being two of the fastest growing sports among girls, Wakeman is offering a week long combination camp of both lacrosse and field hockey. Girls of all ability levels are welcome to attend. They will split the time of the camp working on fundamental skill sets of both sports. The girls will participate in drills, contests, and scrimmages. Players must bring their own stick, protective eye wear and mouth guard.
BOYS LACROSSE CAMP: GRADES 3-4/5-6

The fastest growing sport rolls through to the summer. Players of all abilities are welcome to join us for all the lax drills, skill competitions, contests and games that can be possibly packed into two hours! Players must bring their own equipment. Full Equipment required: helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, mouth guard and a stick.
ARTS & CRAFTS CAMP: GRADES 1-2 & 3-5

Come on down and put your imagination to work! Small camper/instructor ratio of 6:1. All supplies included in fee. A short playground/snack break is scheduled each day. Due to limited space, please sign up for only one session.
PHOTOGRAPHY CAMP: GRADES 3-5

Members will learn tips to improve picture taking, study the history of photography, and experiment with different types of cameras. Members will go on two field trips during the week. Members are required to bring their own digital camera and connectors.
EXPLORATION KIDS: GRADES 3-5

This is a hands-on science program for members in 3rd-5th grade. This program will help kids become more engaged in the wonders of science. Kids will have fun conducting gooey, bubbly, and fizzing experiments, learn about meat-eating plants, discover several types of habitats, make their own volcanoes and discover the universe! We will also travel to the Norwalk Maritime Center where participants will hop aboard the Oceanic for 2.5 hour discovery cruise of Long Island Sound. More information/details will be available in the spring.
WEEK O’ FUN! GRADES 3-5

A four day week of FUN! The week will consist of different trips throughout each day of the week. Through the week we will go to various venues for all of the kids. We will be attending Lake Compounce, The Bronx Zoo, and a couple other fun-filled venues.
WEEK O’ FUN! GRADES 6-8

Similar to our Week of Fun for younger members, but we step the adventure up a notch for a unique week of exciting trips. Each day has a different focus that will have campers completely involved in each experience: Amusement, Nature, Knowledge, Sports and Adventure. The scheduled activities include Lake Compounce, Sleeping Giant Mountain in Hamden, Greenwich Boys & Girls Club Lake & Camp, and a couple other great destinations which we are still deciding. Destinations are subject to change. Further information about the trips will be available at www.wakemanclub.com and sent out after your child is registered.
LEADERSHIP CAMP: GRADES 6-8

Tired of sitting home all summer or attending traditional day camps meant for younger school kids? Join our Future Leaders of Wakeman crew as we wind our way through team building activities, challenges by guest speakers and self-discovery projects, all geared to reinforce strong skills in our future leaders. Using models from Boys & Girls Club’s of America’s Torch and Keystone Youth Service Programs, FLOW activities include: coordinating a special field day event for Wakeman’s younger day campers, an adventurous field trip, and likely get a little dirty while completing a hands on community service project- all in one week! YOUTH FLAG RUGBY GRADES 6-8

A non-contact version of the game of Rugby. Participants will learn or build on the basic fundamentals of the sport. Sessions will be divided into two parts---first, the practice of skills needed to be successful in passing, running, evasion, decision making, and maintaining possession of the ball and second, the reinforcement of skills in game situations. Participants should have a water bottle, and dress suitably to be on the field playing Rugby. The camp will be run by Frank Decker, Head Rugby Coach at Fairfield Prep and USA Rookie Rugby trained coach.
